About The Position

Apple Service Engineering (ASE) builds and provides the systems and infrastructure that power Apple services, including iCloud, iTunes, Siri, and Maps. The ASE Security SRE team is seeking a Site Reliability Engineer to work in close partnership with development teams on services covering host access, disk encryption, and fleet-wide security tooling. These services are foundational to securing and operating Apple’s infrastructure at scale. The role shares responsibility for the reliability, operability, and security posture of these services, from design and planning through production operations and incident response. The engineer participates in planning and design reviews and is accountable for operational quality alongside the engineers who build the services. The position helps define and promote effective operational practices and requires comfort with host- and fleet-level operations, including the practical challenges of deploying and running security tooling across a large, heterogeneous environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related engineering field, or equivalent experience.
  • Seven or more years in a Site Reliability Engineering or infrastructure-focused role.
  • Significant experience in at least one of Swift, Java, Rust, Golang, C, or C++.
  • Deep knowledge of Linux security primitives, systems internals, packaging, and container security.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems design patterns and their security implications.
  • Experience running Tier 1 services with 24/7 support expectations.
  • Strong understanding of operating systems concepts, including multithreading, memory management, networking, storage, and systems application performance tuning.
  • Knowledge of infrastructure components, including network architecture, server fleet provisioning and configuration, and load balancing.
  • In-depth knowledge of TLS/SSL, TCP/IP, and X.509 certificates.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree.
  • Experience deploying fleet-wide agents or security tooling across heterogeneous environments.
  • Understanding of macOS security primitives.
  • Strong grasp of SRE principles, including monitoring, alerting, error budgets, and fault analysis.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and virtualized infrastructure at scale.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with development teams working on host access, disk encryption, and fleet-wide security tooling.
  • Share responsibility for service reliability, operability, and security posture.
  • Contribute to service design and planning, production operations, and incident response.
  • Participate in planning and design reviews.
  • Take accountability for operational quality alongside the service developers.
  • Define and drive adoption of sound operational practices.
  • Operate security tooling across a large, heterogeneous environment.
