The Senior XR Engineer in Mayo Clinic’s Division of Immersive Learning Design invents, designs, optimizes, and analyzes augmented, virtual, and mixed reality solutions for medical education, research, surgical planning, and XR-enabled medical devices. The role integrates digital twins and patient-specific 3D models into XR platforms and creates user-centered immersive experiences that support clinical skills, safety, confidence, and collaboration. Solutions may be deployed across VR, AR, MR, mobile devices, web, and desktop platforms, independent of operating systems and evolving XR hardware. The engineer serves as a technical lead for division projects and clinical sponsors, providing technical and work direction to project team members and mentoring staff as needed. The position designs system architectures, establishes immersive interaction standards and content-visualization processes, evaluates new technologies and equipment, and develops technical documentation. It also involves maintaining sponsor relationships, identifying new applications, staying current with immersive technology, and communicating and presenting effectively. The role works across multidisciplinary teams that include healthcare providers, educators, designers, engineers, artists, medical illustrators, animators, surgeons, physicians, radiologists, programmers, and testers. On-site presence is required, with flexibility to work from home during the week once oriented. The employee must live within a 100-mile driving distance of the Rochester Mayo Clinic campus. Visa sponsorship is unavailable, and Mayo Clinic does not participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.
