Senior Systems Engineer
About The Position
Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to serve as the Edifecs Platform Manager for a Veterans Affairs (VA) program. This remote role leads the Edifecs application support organization, ensuring operational stability, scalability, compliance, and strategic alignment. The engineer provides technical oversight, manages staffing, drives roadmap execution, and partners with product, architecture, vendor, and business teams. The position guides architecture decisions, modernization, cloud scalability, and performance strategies. It configures and maintains Edifecs components and supports EDI Analysts in developing, deploying, and optimizing processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows. The role also troubleshoots platform and transaction issues, manages logging, JVM tuning, and certificate and keystore configurations, and supports releases, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades. Collaboration with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, cloud teams, and business teams is required. This is a full-time, W-2, 100% U.S.-based remote position. U.S. citizenship is required, and the selected candidate must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI). Candidates residing in California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington will not be considered. Requirements
- 10 or more years of experience in EDI, healthcare, or enterprise application operations, software or data engineering, with strong AWS experience.
- Strong knowledge of EDIFECS architecture and transaction lifecycles.
- Strong experience in Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud environments.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Hands-on understanding of Edifecs XEServer, XEngine, TPM, EDI Gateway, and SpecBuilder.
- Experience with EDI integration and interface management for inbound and outbound connectivity using AS2, SFTP, FTPS, and HTTPS channels.
- Experience with API-based integrations and gateway services.
- Experience with EDI troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.
- Experience optimizing job throughput, tuning engine and JVM performance, managing memory, supporting high availability and failover, and using monitoring dashboards.
- Understanding of AWS EC2 instance sizing, OS tuning, storage I/O patterns, file transfer endpoints, routing, firewall coordination, network path debugging, and SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle management.
- Proficiency with Git and GitHub, including branching strategies, pull requests, and collaborative workflows.
- Knowledge of compliance, audit, and partner governance.
- Infrastructure-as-code experience with Ansible and Terraform.
- Ability to communicate technical architecture decisions and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience gathering and translating business reporting requirements into technical data models.
- Ability to drive ambiguous architecture decisions to resolution with limited direction.
- Experience with Agile methodologies, including Scrum and Kanban, and JIRA.
- Strong documentation habits, including architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
- Ability to collaborate with development, operations, and security teams to support seamless production system operations.
- U.S. citizenship is required.
- Must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI).
Nice To Haves
- EDIFECS certification.
- Deep hands-on EDIFECS experience with X.12 EDI transaction standards, including medical claims transactions such as 837, 834, and 277, as well as 270/271 and 278 transactions.
- Knowledge of HIPAA compliance requirements in cloud data architecture.
- Experience with healthcare payer/PBM systems, clearinghouses, or pharmacy operations.
- AWS certification.
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Responsibilities

- Guide EDI Analysts in building, deploying, and optimizing Edifecs processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows.
- Analyze and resolve mapping issues, validation failures, functional errors, and performance bottlenecks.
- Manage system logging, Java Virtual Machine (JVM) tuning, and certificate and keystore configurations.
- Support release deployments, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades.
- Collaborate with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, cloud teams, and business teams.
- Troubleshoot EDI transaction failures, mapping defects, partner-specific rejections, batch job flow failures, and throughput or performance degradation.
- Optimize job throughput and engine performance; support high availability, failover orchestration, and proactive monitoring.
