About The Position

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is hiring a full-time Senior Systems Engineer for a 100% U.S.-based remote opportunity supporting the Department of Veterans Affairs. The role serves as the Edifecs Platform Manager, leading the application support organization and ensuring operational stability, scalability, compliance, and strategic alignment. The position provides technical oversight, manages staffing, drives roadmap execution, and partners with product, architecture, vendor, and business teams. The engineer guides architecture decisions, modernization, cloud scalability, and performance strategies; configures and maintains Edifecs platform components; and supports EDI Analysts with processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows. The role also involves troubleshooting transaction and mapping issues, managing platform logging and JVM tuning, configuring certificates and keystores, and supporting releases, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades. This W-2 role requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI). The position is fully remote within the United States, but applicants from California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington will not be considered. Requirements

At least 10 years of experience in EDI, healthcare, or enterprise application operations, software or data engineering, with strong AWS experience.
Strong knowledge of EDIFECS architecture and transaction lifecycles.
Strong experience in AWS cloud environments.
Hands-on understanding of Edifecs XEServer, XEngine, TPM, EDI Gateway, and SpecBuilder.
Experience managing technical aspects of inbound and outbound EDI connectivity, including AS2, SFTP, FTPS, and HTTPS channels.
Experience with API-based integrations and gateway services.
Experience troubleshooting EDI and performing root-cause analysis of transaction failures, mapping defects, partner rejection patterns, batch flow failures, and performance degradation.
Experience with throughput optimization, engine and JVM tuning, memory management, high availability, failover orchestration, and monitoring dashboards.
Understanding of AWS EC2 sizing, OS tuning, storage I/O patterns, file transfer endpoints, routing, firewall coordination, network path debugging, and SSL/TLS certificate lifecycle management.
Proficiency with Git and GitHub, including branching strategies, pull requests, and collaborative workflows.
Knowledge of compliance, audit, and partner governance.
Infrastructure-as-code experience with Ansible and Terraform.
Ability to communicate technical architecture decisions and trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
Comfort driving ambiguous architecture decisions to resolution with limited direction.
Experience with Agile methodologies, including Scrum and Kanban, and JIRA.
Strong documentation habits, including architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
Ability to collaborate with development, operations, and security teams.
U.S. citizenship required.
Must possess or qualify for a Public Trust (MBI).

Nice To Haves

EDIFECS certification.
Deep hands-on EDIFECS experience with X.12 EDI transaction standards, including medical claims transactions such as 837, 834, and 277, as well as 270/271 and 278 transactions.
Knowledge of HIPAA compliance requirements in cloud data architecture.
Experience with healthcare payer/PBM systems, clearinghouses, or pharmacy operations.
AWS certification.
Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Responsibilities

Lead the Edifecs application support organization as Platform Manager, ensuring operational stability, scalability, compliance, and strategic alignment.
Provide technical oversight, manage staffing, and drive roadmap execution.
Partner with product, architecture, vendor, and business teams.
Guide architecture decisions, modernization efforts, cloud scalability, and performance strategies.
Configure and maintain XEServer, XEngine, Trusted Platform Modules (TPMs), SpecBuilder, and related modules.
Guide EDI Analysts in building, deploying, and optimizing Edifecs processing rules, routing logic, and batch workflows.
Analyze and resolve mapping issues, validation failures, functional errors, and performance bottlenecks.
Manage system logging, JVM tuning, and certificate and keystore configurations.
Support release deployments, environment refreshes, patching, and upgrades.
Collaborate with EDI Analysts, DevSecOps Engineers, cloud teams, and business teams.
Troubleshoot EDI transaction failures, mapping defects, partner-specific rejections, batch job flow failures, and throughput or performance degradation.
Optimize job throughput and engine performance; support high availability, failover orchestration, and proactive monitoring.
Translate business reporting requirements into technical data models.
Document architecture diagrams, data dictionaries, and migration runbooks.
Work collaboratively with development, operations, and security teams to support seamless production operations.
