Senior Staff Power Electronics Control Firmware Engineer

ChargePoint•Campbell, CA
•$200,000 - $230,000

About The Position

ChargePoint is seeking an experienced Power Electronics Controls and Firmware Engineer to develop embedded firmware and control systems for next-generation fast-charging solutions. The role is an individual-contributor position requiring hands-on expertise in power electronics and embedded control, including advanced C programming for microcontrollers, DSPs, and FPGAs. Experience with renewable energy, electric vehicle charging, or energy storage technologies is valued. The engineer will design and implement controls for power conversion systems, validate designs through simulation and laboratory testing, and contribute to hardware-in-the-loop testing, board bring-up, device drivers, specifications, design reviews, and unit testing. The role also requires understanding and applying safety and regulatory requirements for fast-charging power converters, including applicable UL, IEC, and SAE standards.

Requirements

  • 7–10 years of proven experience developing power electronics products.
  • 6+ years of programming experience in C/C++, Assembly for 32-bit controllers and DSPs, and Python for scripting and automation.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing power-converter control code without relying on code-generation tools.
  • Strong experience designing controllers such as PI, PR, and droop controllers, and in modeling and simulation using PLECS, MATLAB, and Simulink, as well as laboratory testing.
  • Extensive experience developing firmware requiring accurate timing in real-time environments, including PLLs, timers, and PWMs.
  • Strong experience developing feedback-based algorithms for harmonic cancellation.
  • Solid background developing embedded firmware for real-time systems using C/C++.
  • Strong grasp of power electronics principles and control techniques for inverters, rectifiers, and DC-DC converters, including LLC, CLLC, DAB, PFC chargers, DC/DC converters, and inverters.
  • Experience working with grid-tie inverter systems, such as solar, BESS, or EVSE systems.
  • Hands-on experience in high-power laboratories and ability to debug hardware issues related to firmware functions in power converters.
  • Skill programming microcontrollers and using peripherals such as timers, PWM, interrupts, GPIOs, ADC, UART, I2C, SPI, CAN, and Ethernet.
  • Familiarity with version control systems such as Git and SVN.
  • Experience with HIL testing, including testbed setup, real-time simulation, plant modeling, hardware interfaces, test scripting, fault injection, and test result analysis.
  • Proven ability to debug complex firmware issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debuggers.
  • Experience working with real-time operating systems (RTOS).
  • Proficiency in FPGA programming and simulation techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with the TI C2000 DSP family.
  • Background in renewable energy, electric vehicle charging, or energy storage technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement embedded control systems for PFC, grid-tie and grid-forming inverters, bidirectional chargers, DC/DC converters, and related power electronics.
  • Stay current with advancements in digital control technologies and controllers.
  • Validate design concepts through computer simulations and hands-on laboratory testing.
  • Create automated test cases for hardware-in-the-loop modeling and testing, where applicable.
  • Perform board bring-up and develop device drivers for communication protocols such as CAN, I2C, and SPI.
  • Contribute to specification development, participate in design reviews, and perform unit testing.
  • Ensure a thorough understanding of safety and regulatory requirements for power converters used in fast-charging applications.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory and safety standards, including UL, IEC, and SAE.

Benefits

  • New-hire RSU grant and annual merit-based RSU grants.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k).
  • Paid time off.
  • Parental leave.
  • Life and disability insurance.
  • Wellness resources.
