Senior Power Electronics Engineer

Critical Loop•Long Beach, CA
•$150,000 - $200,000

About The Position

Critical Loop is seeking a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to lead development of sophisticated power, digital, and mixed-signal electronic systems. The role owns hardware development from system architecture and component selection through schematic design, PCB development, hardware bring-up, validation, and production release. The engineer works independently and in close partnership with engineering leadership to make system-level technical decisions, solve complex hardware challenges, and advance designs from concept to production. Strong hands-on expertise in power electronics, FPGA-based control, and hardware development is essential.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • 3–7 years of relevant electrical engineering experience focused on hardware or product development.
  • Extensive hands-on power-electronics design experience, particularly with DC-DC converters, motor drives, high-voltage systems, or energy-storage interfaces.
  • Strong background in mixed-signal circuit development, including analog signal conditioning, ADCs, sensors, and filtering.
  • Demonstrated FPGA development experience with VHDL or Verilog, including simulation, synthesis, and hardware-level validation.
  • Proficiency with Altium or comparable PCB design software.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and formal engineering documentation.
  • Significant laboratory experience with advanced electrical test equipment and the ability to independently diagnose and resolve sophisticated hardware problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to lead technical discussions, document engineering decisions clearly, and collaborate across engineering and operations teams.
  • Must not require immigration support now or in the future; Critical Loop does not provide visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Own complete electrical hardware development—including mixed-signal, digital, and power electronics—from initial architecture through final design release.
  • Establish and drive system-level electrical architectures, including power-conversion approaches, control interfaces, protection strategies, and signal-processing chains.
  • Design and develop high-voltage DC-DC and DC-AC conversion systems, motor-drive electronics, and power-management circuitry.
  • Create and support FPGA-based control and signal-processing systems using VHDL or Verilog, including simulation, timing closure, and integration with embedded control platforms.
  • Develop production-ready schematics, bills of materials, and PCB layouts, and establish design practices that support manufacturability, reliability, and consistent production.
  • Contribute to electrical design reviews, failure-mode analysis, and design-for-manufacturing activities to identify and address potential issues before production.
  • Lead hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, and debugging of new boards and electronic systems across power, digital, and mixed-signal applications.
  • Use laboratory equipment to diagnose hardware performance and complex electrical issues.
  • Develop and execute electrical validation and characterization strategies, including thermal performance, efficiency, EMI, and functional operation.
  • Analyze test results and turn findings into actionable hardware and design improvements.
  • Support environmental qualification and regulatory compliance activities, including EMC, electrical safety, and other applicable certification requirements.
  • Collaborate with contract manufacturers, PCB fabrication partners, and component suppliers on design feedback, manufacturing considerations, and component qualification.

Benefits

  • Equity ownership through stock options.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage through an HRA with a generous allowance.
  • Retirement savings plan.
  • Unlimited paid time off.
