Senior Power Electronics Engineer

CesiumAstro•Westminster, CO

About The Position

CesiumAstro is seeking a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to develop power electronics for satellites, spacecraft, and aerospace systems. The role involves full-stack development, from concept development through detailed design, analysis, board layout, testing, and delivery. The engineer will contribute directly to the business in a startup environment while applying technical rigor to high-reliability space and airborne products. The successful candidate will present engineering design review materials to customers and the executive team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • At least 5 years of industry or university research experience in board-level power electronics design, analysis, and testing.
  • Experience owning power electronics or power subsystem design, including power architecture and requirements definition, trade studies, power converter and analog electronics design, component selection, and detailed design.
  • Experience performing or guiding complex PCB layout for analog and power electronics.
  • Experience with analysis and simulation tools such as SPICE, LTSPICE, SIMetrix/SIMPLIS, PLECS, Simulink, MATLAB, or MathCAD.
  • Strong laboratory testing and troubleshooting experience for prototyping, design verification testing, and qualification of analog and power electronics hardware.
  • Direct experience designing high-reliability electronics for automotive, space, or defense applications, including component derating, worst-case analysis, and thermal constraints.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, conditional resident, asylee, refugee, or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations, in accordance with U.S. Government Space Technology Export Regulations.

  • Proficiency with PCB design tools such as Altium, OrCAD/Allegro, PADS/Xpedition, or similar.
  • Experience running board-level power integrity simulation tools such as Ansys SiWave, ADS SIPro, or HyperLynx.
  • Experience designing for space radiation environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end design of power converters and power management and control circuits, from concept and architecture definition through schematic design, PCB design, testing, qualification, production transition, and production support.
  • Create detailed schematics for low- to high-complexity power electronics, including individual converters, multi-output power supply modules, and power management circuitry.
  • Perform detailed PCB layout in Altium Designer independently or in collaboration with a PCB Drafter.
  • Model and analyze analog and power electronics designs, including worst-case circuit, stress, small-signal and stability, power loss and efficiency optimization, and power integrity analyses.
  • Develop design verification test plans, requirement compliance matrices, system integration and qualification test plans, and production acceptance test plans.
  • Bring up and perform design verification testing of power electronics circuits and modules, often working with a technician or junior engineer.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary engineering team, lead system integration and qualification campaigns, and release analog and power electronics designs to production.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support their technical understanding and professional development.
  • Research power electronics technology and industry trends to drive innovation and intellectual property generation.
