Senior Power Electronics Engineer

CesiumAstro•Westminster, CO

About The Position

CesiumAstro develops communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. The Senior Power Electronics Engineer will perform hands-on, end-to-end development of power electronics for high-reliability space and airborne applications, from concept development through detailed design, analysis, PCB layout, testing, qualification, and delivery. The role involves both technical breadth and depth in a startup environment, with work that directly contributes to the business. The engineer will present design review materials to customers and the executive team and collaborate across disciplines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • At least 5 years of industry or university research experience in board-level power electronics design, analysis, and testing.
  • Experience owning power electronics or power subsystem design, including power architecture and requirements definition, trade studies, power converter and analog electronics design, component selection, and detailed design.
  • Experience performing or guiding complex PCB layout for analog and power electronics.
  • Experience with analysis and simulation tools such as SPICE, LTspice, SIMetrix/SIMPLIS, PLECS, Simulink, MATLAB, or MathCAD.
  • Strong laboratory testing and troubleshooting experience for prototyping, design verification, and qualification of analog and power electronics hardware.
  • Direct experience designing high-reliability electronics for automotive, space, or defense applications, including part derating, worst-case analysis, and thermal constraints.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must meet applicable U.S. space technology export requirements as a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, conditional resident, asylee, refugee, or person eligible to obtain the required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience delivering subcircuit or board designs to production and deployment.
  • Proficiency with PCB design tools such as Altium, OrCAD/Allegro, PADS/Xpedition, or similar.
  • Experience using board-level power integrity simulation tools such as Ansys SiWave, ADS SIPro, or HyperLynx.
  • Experience designing for space radiation environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end design of power converters and power management and control circuits, from concept and architecture definition through schematic design, PCB design, testing, qualification, production transition, and production support.
  • Create detailed schematics for power electronics designs ranging from individual power converters to multi-output power supply modules and power management circuitry.
  • Perform detailed PCB layout in Altium Designer, independently or with a PCB Drafter.
  • Model and analyze analog and power electronics designs, including worst-case circuit, stress, small-signal and stability, power loss and efficiency optimization, and power integrity analyses.
  • Develop design verification test plans, requirements compliance matrices, system integration and qualification test plans, and production acceptance test plans.
  • Bring up and conduct design verification testing of power electronics circuits and modules, often alongside a technician or junior engineer.
  • Collaborate with the multidisciplinary engineering team, lead system integration and qualification campaigns, and release analog and power electronics designs to production.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support their technical understanding and professional development.
  • Research new power electronics technologies and industry trends to drive innovation and intellectual property generation.
  • Present engineering design review materials to customers and the executive team.
