Senior Power Electronics Engineer

RTX•El Segundo, CA
•$95,500 - $181,700•Onsite

About The Position

Raytheon is seeking an experienced Power Electronics Engineer (P3) to join a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting aerospace and defense programs. The role leads the design, development, analysis, verification, and integration of power-conversion hardware for airborne platforms, space systems, radar, and next-generation power architectures. The engineer will own complex circuit and subsystem designs, drive technical decisions, and mentor junior engineers while delivering high-performance, high-reliability power solutions. The position is onsite in El Segundo, California. U.S. citizenship and an active, existing DoD Secret clearance are required by the first day. The salary range is $95,500–$181,700. Relocation is eligible. Hired applicants may be eligible for benefits and annual incentive compensation, subject to the applicable business unit, position level, and collective-bargaining status.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in power-electronics design, analysis, or test.
  • Experience with switched-mode power-converter topologies, such as buck, boost, flyback, half/full bridge, resonant, PFC, and motor control.
  • Experience using simulation tools such as SPICE, LTspice, PLECS, or MATLAB/Simulink for design and verification.
  • Laboratory experience with oscilloscopes, power analyzers, high-voltage equipment, and/or electronic loads.
  • Experience with high-power and high-voltage safety principles and best practices.
  • U.S. citizenship; ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance, with an active and existing DoD Secret clearance required after day one.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with emphasis in power electronics, control systems, or electromagnetics.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership developing power-conversion hardware from concept through qualification and production.
  • Experience with high-voltage and high-power systems, including converters above 1 kW or architectures above 600 V.
  • Proficiency with advanced modeling tools such as PSIM, PLECS, MATLAB, ANSYS, Flotherm, or Maxwell.
  • Experience designing custom magnetics, including planar magnetics, high-frequency inductors, and radiation-tolerant transformers.
  • Familiarity with digital-control implementation, firmware collaboration, and closed-loop tuning for power stages.
  • Background in EMI/EMC mitigation, compliance testing, and certification to MIL or DO standards.
  • Experience supporting proposals, ROM estimates, and technical-volume writing.
  • Prior mentorship or technical oversight of junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of power-electronics hardware, including AC/DC and DC/DC converters, motor/servo drives, PFC stages, filters, and power-system architectures.
  • Own circuit- and subsystem-level designs, including schematic creation, component selection, and guidance of PCB layout for high-density, high-reliability power boards.
  • Perform engineering analysis, including SPICE/PLECS simulation, worst-case analysis, derating, reliability modeling, and thermal and electromagnetic evaluations.
  • Develop and validate custom magnetics, including electrical models, core and winding selection, and optimization for size, efficiency, and thermal performance.
  • Drive adoption of SiC and GaN power semiconductors and develop gate-driver strategies, protection schemes, and high-frequency architectures.
  • Ensure EMI/EMC compliance through modeling, design techniques, and testing aligned with MIL STD and aerospace requirements; recommend layout and filtering approaches.
  • Lead prototype bring-up, debugging, characterization, and formal validation of power hardware.
  • Develop test plans, procedures, and verification documentation for development stages from breadboard through qualification.
  • Collaborate with systems, digital design, mechanical/thermal engineering, manufacturing, and integration teams.
  • Contribute to and maintain system requirements, traceability, design artifacts, and engineering documentation in accordance with review and compliance processes.
  • Drive root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and production support for power hardware.
  • Participate in and present at technical design reviews, trade studies, proposals, and IRAD/technology maturation activities; influence architecture and design direction.
  • Mentor P1–P2 engineers through technical guidance and review support.
