Staff Power Electronics Control Firmware Engineer

ChargePoint•Campbell, CA
•$178,260 - $235,750

About The Position

ChargePoint is seeking a seasoned Power Electronics Controls and Firmware Engineer to develop embedded power-control firmware for next-generation fast-charging products. The role combines control engineering, power electronics, real-time embedded firmware, laboratory validation, and hardware debugging. The engineer will work on systems such as PFC, chargers, DC/DC converters, and inverters, and will help develop specifications, review designs, and test implementations. The position is based in Campbell, California, and reports to the Senior Manager, Power Electronics Firmware.

Requirements

  • 8–12 years of proven experience developing power electronics products.
  • 8–12 years of programming experience in C/C++ and Assembly for 32-bit controllers and DSPs, and Python for scripting and automation.
  • Experience implementing power-converter control code without using a code-generation tool.
  • Solid experience developing embedded firmware in C/C++ for real-time systems.
  • Strong understanding of power electronics principles and control techniques for inverters, rectifiers, and DC-DC converters, including LLC, CLLC, and DAB topologies.
  • Experience with grid-tied inverter systems, such as solar, BESS, or EVSE.
  • Hands-on experience in a high-power lab and ability to debug firmware-related power-converter hardware issues.
  • Proficiency programming microcontrollers and using peripherals including timers, PWM, interrupts, GPIOs, ADC, UART, I2C, SPI, CAN, and Ethernet.
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git or SVN.
  • Expertise developing secure and reliable bootloaders, including memory management, firmware partitioning, communication interfaces, flash programming, and verification and validation.
  • Experience with HIL testing, including testbed setup, real-time simulation, plant modelling, hardware interfaces, test scripting, fault injection, and test-result analysis.
  • Proven ability to debug complex firmware using tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analysers, and debuggers.
  • Experience working with real-time operating systems.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols commonly used in power electronics systems.
  • Experience developing control systems for power inverters and converters.
  • Knowledge of control-system design, modelling, and simulation using PLECS, MATLAB, Simulink, or similar tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience developing automated test cases for Hardware-in-the-Loop modelling and testing.
  • Experience in FPGA programming and simulation techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement embedded controls for PFC, chargers, DC/DC converters, inverters, and related systems.
  • Bring up boards and develop device drivers for interfaces such as CAN, I2C, and SPI.
  • Participate in specification development and design reviews, and execute unit tests.
  • Prove design concepts using computer simulation and physical laboratory implementation and testing.
  • Develop automated test cases for Hardware-in-the-Loop modelling and testing (preferred).
  • Stay current with developments in digital control and controllers.
  • Write lean code for real-time, interrupt-driven applications.
  • Interpret schematics and debug hardware issues.
  • Address safety regulatory requirements for power converters used in fast chargers.
