Staff Power Electronics Engineer

CesiumAstro•Westminster, CO

About The Position

CesiumAstro is seeking a Staff Power Electronics Engineer to support the Skylark product line, which rapidly designs, builds, and tests active phased array antennas for terrestrial and airborne applications. Programs include high-power ground terminals for missile defense and connectivity solutions for commercial airlines and helicopters. The role leads power-system architecture and requirements development, designs power converters and distribution systems, and oversees analysis, verification, integration, qualification, and production release. The engineer will also mentor junior engineers and lead a small team to drive project execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
  • At least 8 years of experience designing analog and power electronics.
  • Experience with electrical power systems and subsystems, including power architecture and requirements, SWAP-C trade studies, power-converter topology selection, and power-management and control blocks.
  • Experience designing, testing, and qualifying single-phase and three-phase off-line AC-DC power supplies and DC-DC power supplies for industrial, airborne, or military systems.
  • Knowledge of control theory and power-electronics stability, including laboratory characterization of control loops and impedances.
  • Experience designing power filters for low-noise outputs and power-line electromagnetic compatibility.
  • Experience developing design-verification, compliance, integration, qualification, and production-acceptance test plans.
  • Experience performing worst-case circuit analysis, stress analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, and reliability analysis for power supplies.
  • Extensive hands-on electronics and power-converter testing and troubleshooting using laboratory instruments such as oscilloscopes, impedance analyzers, spectrum analyzers, electronic loads, and signal generators.
  • Experience with analysis and simulation tools such as SPICE, LTspice, SIMetrix/SIMPLIS, PLECS, Simulink, MATLAB, MathCAD, ANSYS Q3D and SiWave, or HyperLynx.
  • Experience with isolation and grounding, failure-mode effects analysis and fault-tolerant design, and thermal management of power electronics.
  • Experience designing and testing power-electronics units to meet standards and requirements in automotive, industrial, aircraft, or military markets, such as FCC, CISPR, UL safety standards, ECSS, NASA, or MIL standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience designing and testing isolated and non-isolated DC-DC converters, such as discrete linear regulators, buck, boost, buck-boost, flyback, and forward converters.
  • Experience designing or specifying custom power magnetics for power supplies and power-line filters.
  • Knowledge of power-stage design and control methods for power-factor-correction converters and active rectifiers.
  • Experience generating statements of work and requirements for external vendors, selecting vendors, and managing vendors for power-supply and power-system rack development.
  • Experience with schematic-capture and PCB-layout tools such as Altium, OrCAD, Allegro, or Xpedition.
  • Experience running board-level power-integrity simulations using tools such as Ansys SiWave or HyperLynx.
  • Knowledge of soft-switching and resonant power-converter topologies, such as LLC, CLLC, series resonant, phase-shifted full bridge, and dual active bridge.
  • Programming skills for hardware testing and data processing, such as Python or MATLAB.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of power-system architectures and derive power-subsystem requirements.
  • Design DC-DC converters, power supplies, and distribution systems from 0.8 V to 400 V and from a few watts to more than 20 kW.
  • Design single-phase and three-phase AC-DC power supplies and distribution systems ranging from a few kilowatts to more than 20 kW.
  • Perform comprehensive analysis of AC-DC and DC-DC power supplies, including worst-case circuit analysis, stress analysis, small-signal modeling, failure modes and effects analysis, reliability analysis, and power-integrity analysis.
  • Develop design-verification test plans, requirement-compliance matrices, system integration and qualification test plans, and production acceptance test plans.
  • Lead board bring-up and design-verification testing of analog and power-electronics circuits.
  • Lead system integration, qualification campaigns, and production release of power-supply modules and systems.
  • Mentor junior engineers and foster knowledge sharing.
  • Lead a small team of power-electronics engineers to drive project execution.
