Senior Power Electronics Engineer

Commonwealth Fusion Systems•Devens, MA
•$134,000 - $205,000•Onsite

About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is developing commercially viable fusion power plants and is hiring a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to lead work on its Pulsed Electrical Distribution System (PEDS) team. The team is developing next-generation power supplies for ARC, its planned grid-scale commercial fusion power plant, and will use experience from SPARC as the technology is demonstrated. The engineer will architect, design, model, build, test, validate, and productize high-power medium-voltage power supplies and their components. The role also involves working with semiconductor manufacturers, developing requirements and qualification plans, supporting cross-functional electrical-power developments, and documenting engineering work. The position requires laboratory testing and work in a facility with industrial hazards. Salary is $134,000–$205,000 per year, plus equity and benefits; actual salary depends on level, location, qualifications, and experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 8 years of related experience, or a Master’s degree and at least 6 years of experience, with power-electronics-based systems.
  • Hands-on product-development experience with power-electronic converter systems.
  • Knowledge of inverter circuit topologies and their benefits and limitations.
  • Experience modeling and simulating with tools such as PLECS, PSPICE, or MATLAB.
  • Extensive experience with semiconductor devices such as IGBTs and MOSFETs, and magnetic components such as transformers and inductors.
  • Fundamental understanding of gate-drive circuits, their design, and device protection.
  • Experience with packaging design for power-conversion equipment and thermal management.
  • Experience with high-power electrical equipment above 10 MVA.
  • Hands-on laboratory testing of electrical components, subassemblies, and systems, including use of oscilloscopes and other measurement equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, type, or sit for extended periods.
  • Willingness to travel or occasionally work required nights, weekends, or on-call.
  • Ability to work in a facility containing industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.
  • Compliance with U.S. laws concerning export-controlled or protected technologies or information is required; any employment offer is contingent on this compliance.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering focused on power electronics.
  • Experience applying compliance standards to designs, such as IEC, UL, CSA, or NEC.
  • Experience in problem-solving, root-cause analysis, and field-containment actions.
  • Hands-on prototype building and testing, with documentation of results.
  • Intelligent gate-drive circuit design experience.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and design next-generation high-power (>10 MVA) medium-voltage power supplies for ARC tokamaks using silicon and silicon-carbide semiconductor devices.
  • Collaborate with power semiconductor manufacturers to develop and qualify devices for fusion applications.
  • Model and simulate power-electronic circuits and components to assess converter performance, efficiency, and stability.
  • Build, test, and validate prototype four-quadrant power modules, including H-bridges, DC links, passives, and thermal management.
  • Convert qualified prototype designs into productized solutions for ARC power supplies.
  • Develop technical requirements, specifications, and qualification plans for power-circuit components such as capacitors, magnetics, and passives.
  • Support cross-functional technical development of power distribution, energy storage, RF, and other systems that deliver electrical power for fusion applications.
  • Document designs, simulations, and test results in engineering reports.
  • Conduct design reviews and organize and present results to technical and non-technical audiences.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation with equity.
  • 13 company-wide holidays.
  • Flexible vacation days.
  • 10 sick days.
  • Generous parental leave policy.
  • Health insurance.
  • Dental insurance.
  • Vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with employer matching.
  • Professional growth opportunities.
