About The Position

InfluxData is hiring a Senior Staff Software Engineer to serve as a company-level technical leader for InfluxDB 3.0, reporting directly to the Chief Product Officer. InfluxDB 3.0 is a fast, columnar time series database backed by object storage and built in Rust using Apache Arrow, Arrow Flight, and DataFusion. This is a hands-on role with company-wide reach: the engineer will contribute to the storage engine, shape the product’s technical direction, translate product strategy into architecture, and represent InfluxData’s engineering perspective to executives and customers. The role spans technical strategy, core product development, and cross-company leadership. It includes shaping the long-term vision for InfluxDB 3.0 and its place in the product portfolio, influencing roadmaps and build-versus-buy decisions, designing and writing production Rust, and driving work in distributed caching, reliability, and performance. The engineer will collaborate on cloud deployment discussions across AWS and Azure, establish engineering standards across teams and divisions, participate in the on-call rotation, and mentor staff and senior engineers.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of progressive software engineering experience, including several years at senior staff level or above.
  • A track record of building and operating distributed systems at large scale.
  • Hands-on experience building on multiple cloud vendors (AWS, GCP, Azure) and object storage.
  • Deep hands-on Rust experience, or strong systems experience and a desire to master Rust.
  • Expertise in distributed caching, reliability, and performance engineering.
  • Proven ability to set technical direction across multiple teams or divisions and influence executive decisions.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with engineers, executives, and customers.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree in computer science or a related field; equivalent experience counts.
  • Experience with time series or observability workloads at high ingest rates.
  • Experience running a database as a managed cloud service.
  • Published talks, papers, or writing on databases or distributed systems.

Responsibilities

  • Help shape the long-term technical vision for InfluxDB 3.0 and its place in the wider product portfolio.
  • Partner with engineering leaders on product strategy, roadmap bets, and build-versus-buy decisions.
  • Identify high-priority problems early and determine which problems not to solve.
  • Design and write production Rust for the storage engine, including ingestion, compaction, columnar storage on object stores, caching, and query execution with DataFusion.
  • Drive challenging distributed caching, reliability, and performance work, from benchmarks through production.
  • Contribute to cloud deployment discussions across AWS and Azure.
  • Set engineering standards and best practices adopted across multiple teams and divisions.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation and promote operational excellence.
  • Mentor staff and senior engineers and help develop future technical leaders.
