Senior Software Engineer – Splunk Platform Authorization

Cisco•Boulder, CO
•$139,300 - $203,600•Remote

About The Position

Join Cisco’s Splunk Integrated Core Platform team to help shape the authorization infrastructure behind Splunk’s enterprise observability and security platform. The Authorization team works on distributed systems, identity, and access control, designing high-performance services that establish trust and enforce authorization across interconnected systems using attribute-based and role-based access control (ABAC/RBAC). The role involves hands-on technical leadership and direct development of core systems, primarily in a substantial C++ codebase, while contributing to Go-based services and the platform’s evolution toward cloud-native architecture. The engineer will own complex initiatives, make architectural decisions, and collaborate across engineering teams to deliver scalable, reliable authorization services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field with 7+ years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree with 4+ years of relevant experience; or a PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience.
  • Software development experience in C++, including designing, maintaining, or enhancing complex backend systems.
  • Experience designing and developing distributed systems or large-scale backend services in production environments.
  • Prior experience in software architecture and technical design, and translating complex requirements into scalable engineering solutions.
  • Experience leading technical initiatives, coordinating implementation across engineers, and driving projects from design through delivery.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Go and cloud-native infrastructure, including Kubernetes, containers, or microservices.
  • Experience designing high-performance, highly available systems operating at enterprise scale.
  • Understanding of identity and access management, authentication, authorization, RBAC/ABAC, or service-to-service trust models.
  • Experience modernizing large legacy codebases, addressing architectural complexity, and improving system reliability and performance.
  • Experience with observability platforms, enterprise infrastructure, security systems, or highly distributed cloud services.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, design, and develop high-performance backend services using C++, while contributing to Go-based services and modernization of Splunk’s core platform.
  • Lead technical design discussions and make architectural decisions involving distributed systems, scalability, performance, reliability, and service-to-service trust.
  • Own complex engineering initiatives from design through execution, break down large projects, identify opportunities for parallel development, and coordinate work across engineers.
  • Improve and modernize large-scale C++ infrastructure, addressing architectural complexity and technical debt and supporting the transition toward cloud-native and Kubernetes-based services.
  • Provide technical guidance through design and code reviews, collaborate across teams, and contribute to production reliability, troubleshooting, and operational support.
