About The Position

Evinova is a health-tech business focused on advancing digital transformation across the life sciences sector. It develops digital solutions intended to improve clinical research, care delivery, and patient experiences. This Senior Software Engineer role is based in Gaithersburg, Maryland, and is primarily backend-focused, with significant product impact. The engineer will design, build, and evolve backend services and APIs that help clinical trial teams configure, deploy, and maintain digital study experiences safely and efficiently. The role involves owning technical outcomes and contributing to design and engineering decisions, while collaborating with engineers, UX designers, product colleagues, and study delivery teams. The team is distributed across locations and time zones, including Europe, so the engineer should expect some early-morning overlap and should communicate and document decisions effectively. Employees are expected to work from the office three days per week. Candidates must live within commuting distance of Gaithersburg or be willing to relocate. The technology environment includes TypeScript, Node.js, REST APIs, OpenAPI, JSON Schema, MongoDB, relational databases, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS. React and related frontend technologies are used across the wider product. The role is primarily backend-focused, but collaboration with frontend engineers and occasional work across the stack may be appropriate. Engineers are expected to use approved AI tools responsibly and remain accountable for validating generated output and meeting security, privacy, quality, and regulatory requirements. Success includes delivering capabilities that reduce manual work and rework in study setup and maintenance, making configuration and change workflows faster and less error-prone, improving testing, observability, and incident response, and establishing reusable technical patterns and documentation while mentoring colleagues.

Requirements

  • Typically five or more years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial backend development.
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience owning features, services, or technical initiatives through design, implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing improvement.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and building backend services and APIs, including significant professional experience with TypeScript and Node.js.
  • Experience designing data models and working with relational or document databases.
  • Experience with automated testing across unit, component, integration, and end-to-end levels.
  • Experience with branching, code review, and continuous integration in a shared repository.
  • Experience developing, deploying, or operating containerized services in AWS using Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Ability to work effectively with ambiguity, make pragmatic technical decisions, and balance delivery needs with long-term platform health.
  • Clear communication and effective collaboration across technical and non-technical disciplines, including in a distributed team.
  • Flexibility for reasonable meeting-time overlap with colleagues in other time zones and proactive written communication.
  • Must reside within commuting distance of Gaithersburg, Maryland, or be willing to relocate.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with MongoDB.
  • Experience applying Domain-Driven Design principles to complex business domains.
  • Experience with CI/CD, infrastructure automation, monitoring, logging, and production support.

  • Experience with React and related frontend technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain reliable tools for study configuration, deployment, operation, and maintenance.
  • Build TypeScript and Node.js backend services, REST APIs, integrations, and data models.
  • Evaluate technical options and trade-offs and contribute to reusable engineering patterns and standards.
  • Own significant features, services, or technical initiatives from design through implementation, testing, deployment, and ongoing improvement.
  • Collaborate with engineers, UX designers, product colleagues, and study delivery teams across locations and time zones, keeping decisions transparent and well documented.
  • Develop clean, maintainable, testable, and secure software with appropriate automated testing.
  • Design for scalability, observability, resilience, and performance, and contribute to monitoring, troubleshooting, and release support in line with the production-support model.
  • Reduce technical debt, strengthen automation, share knowledge, mentor colleagues, and improve engineering practices.
  • Use approved AI tools responsibly, reviewing and validating generated output and meeting security, privacy, quality, and regulatory requirements.
