About The Position

Join M&T Bank's API Services organization as a Senior Software Engineer supporting Core Banking APIs. You will help develop and modernize backend services that connect applications across the Bank to critical downstream systems. API Services acts as a central integration layer, allowing digital, business banking, retail, and commercial applications to securely access account, transaction, and statement information. In this role, you will design, develop, and support Java-based APIs and backend services while contributing to cloud modernization and the evolution of the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem. You will work in a collaborative engineering environment, developing expertise in specific services while gaining exposure to multiple products and application areas. The team encourages curiosity, continuous learning, and innovation, including dedicated opportunities to explore new ideas and technologies. The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

Associate's degree and at least 5 years of systems analysis and/or application development experience, or a Bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of such experience; in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 7 years of education and/or relevant work experience, including at least 3 years of systems analysis and/or application development experience.
Advanced proficiency in at least one relevant programming language.
Experience developing backend applications and services using Java or a similar object-oriented programming language.
Experience developing applications and backend services using Spring Boot or a comparable application development framework.
Experience designing, developing, or supporting APIs, RESTful services, and API-driven architectures.
Experience with source control and software development lifecycle tools and practices.
Experience supporting complex enterprise applications and technology platforms.
Experience working with cloud technologies or cloud-based application environments.

Nice To Haves

At least 5 years of Java development experience.

Responsibilities

Work independently and within the approved Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) to process, design, and develop applications that meet business needs and minimize risk by writing clean, resilient code.
Design, develop, enhance, and support Java-based backend applications, APIs, and services for the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem.
Build and support API-driven solutions and integrations connecting internal and external banking applications with downstream systems.
Develop new API capabilities and enhance existing services to address evolving business and technology needs.
Review pull requests, provide feedback, and carry out change management for requests.
Write organized, clean, efficient, and secure source code at an advanced level in at least one programming language, applying appropriate data structures and algorithms to business problems.
Use source code management tools to manage and deploy code and applications, comply with SDLC policies, and help resolve merge conflicts.
Analyze and critique technical and business requirements for completeness, accuracy, and feasibility.
Troubleshoot and support backend applications, services, APIs, and related platform issues in development and production environments.
Document and clearly communicate technical implementation details to engineers, technical partners, and dependent teams.
Conduct code reviews and provide constructive feedback on code quality and improvements.
Contribute to discussions with business and technical stakeholders about application architecture and technology solutions.
Contribute to modernization, including migration and evolution of existing services toward cloud-based technologies.
Support highly available, enterprise-scale applications and services.
Contribute to engineering continuous improvement and innovation, including the use of emerging and AI-assisted development technologies.
Follow the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls; identify risk-related issues requiring escalation to management.
