About The Position

Join M&T Bank's API Services organization as a Senior Software Engineer supporting Core Banking APIs. The role develops and modernizes backend services that connect Bank applications to critical downstream systems. API Services provides a central integration layer through which digital, business banking, retail, and commercial applications securely access account, transaction, and statement information. Design, develop, and support Java-based APIs and backend services while contributing to cloud modernization and the evolution of the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem. Work in a collaborative engineering environment that encourages service expertise, exposure across products and application areas, continuous learning, curiosity, and innovation. The role works independently and within the approved Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC), supporting highly available, enterprise-scale applications and services. It has no supervisory responsibilities and includes adherence to the Company's risk, regulatory, and internal control standards.

Requirements

Associate's degree and at least 5 years of systems analysis and/or application development experience, or a bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of such experience; alternatively, a combined minimum of 7 years of education and/or relevant work experience, including at least 3 years of systems analysis and/or application development experience.
Advanced proficiency in at least one relevant programming language.
Experience developing backend applications and services using Java or a similar object-oriented programming language.
Experience developing applications and backend services using Spring Boot or a comparable application development framework.
Experience designing, developing, or supporting APIs, RESTful services, and API-driven architectures.
Experience with source control and software development lifecycle tools and practices.
Experience supporting complex enterprise applications and technology platforms.
Experience working with cloud technologies or cloud-based application environments.

Nice To Haves

At least 5 years of Java development experience.

Advanced analytical skills specific to application development.

Strong backend software engineering experience, including development and support of enterprise APIs and services.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, enhance, and support Java-based backend applications, APIs, and services for the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem.
Build and support API-driven solutions and integrations connecting internal and external banking applications to downstream systems.
Develop new API capabilities and enhance existing services to meet evolving business and technology needs.
Work independently within the approved SDLC to process, design, and develop applications that address business needs and minimize risk, writing clean and resilient code.
Review pull requests, provide feedback, conduct code reviews, and execute change management requests.
Write organized, clean, efficient, and secure source code at an advanced level in at least one programming language, applying appropriate data structures and algorithms.
Use source code management tools to manage and deploy code and applications, comply with SDLC policies, and resolve merge conflicts.
Analyze and critique technical and business requirements for completeness, accuracy, and feasibility.
Troubleshoot and support backend applications, services, APIs, and related platform issues in development and production environments.
Document and communicate technical implementation details clearly with engineers, technical partners, and dependent teams.
Contribute to discussions with business and technical stakeholders about application architecture and technology solutions.
Contribute to modernization efforts, including migrating and evolving services toward cloud-based technologies.
Support highly available, enterprise-scale applications and services.
Contribute to continuous improvement and innovation, including the use of emerging and AI-assisted development technologies.
Adhere to Company risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls; identify risk-related issues for escalation to management.
