About The Position

Join M&T Bank’s API Services organization as a Software Engineer developing and supporting backend services and APIs that connect applications and systems across the Bank. API Services centrally manages APIs used by internal and external teams, enabling applications to access information and capabilities across banking systems. The role works with Java, Spring Boot, APIs, and cloud technologies in a collaborative engineering environment that values problem solving, curiosity, continuous learning, and innovation. The engineer develops proficiency in assigned services while building broader knowledge of related technologies and applications. At the proficient level, the role involves writing code and contributing to technical requirements gathering, following banking technology standards, and supporting the stability and resiliency of banking technology throughout the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC). The position works as part of a collaborative software engineering environment supporting applications and services within API Services. It has no supervisory responsibilities. The pay range is $80,900.00–$134,800.00 annually. Location: Buffalo, New York, United States of America.

Requirements

Associate's degree and at least 3 years of systems analysis and/or application development work experience, or bachelor's degree and at least 1 year of such experience; alternatively, a combined minimum of 5 years of education and/or relevant work experience, including at least 1 year of systems analysis and/or application development work experience.
Professional proficiency in at least one relevant programming language.
Experience with Java or a comparable object-oriented programming language.
Experience with Spring Boot or a comparable application development framework.
Experience developing or supporting backend applications, APIs, or services.
Experience with cloud technologies or cloud-based application environments.

Nice To Haves

At least 3 years of Java development experience.

Responsibilities

Work within the approved Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to solve business needs and minimize risk through clean, resilient code, with guidance as needed.
Develop, enhance, and support backend applications, APIs, and services supporting the Bank's enterprise API ecosystem.
Develop and support Java-based applications and services using Spring Boot.
Build and enhance API-driven solutions and integrations that enable communication between applications and downstream systems.
Provide feedback on team members’ pull requests and participate in code reviews by presenting and providing constructive feedback on code quality and improvements.
Write organized, clean, efficient, and secure source code at a proficient level in at least one programming language, subject to verification by a senior team member.
Use source control management tools to organize and maintain code, with manager review for structure and conflict resolution.
Jointly analyze technical and business requirements with senior team members for completeness, accuracy, feasibility, and accurate work scoping.
Troubleshoot and support backend applications, APIs, services, and related technology components across development and production environments.
Collaborate, document, and communicate technical implementation details clearly and concisely within the team on dependent requirements as needed.
Contribute to application modernization, including the transition and evolution of existing services toward cloud technologies.
Collaborate with technical teams and partners across the Bank to support integrated applications and services.
Participate in continuous learning and innovation, including exposure to emerging technologies and AI-assisted development tools.
Follow the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls; identify risk-related issues that need escalation to management.
Promote a culture of belonging that reflects the M&T Bank brand.
Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points and applicable issues raised by external regulators.
