Senior Software Engineer, Mapping

ALSO•Palo Alto, CA
•$165,000 - $210,000

About The Position

ALSO is an electric mobility company focused on building vertically integrated small EVs to address global mobility challenges. Its mission is to replace many local car, truck, and SUV trips with more affordable, enjoyable, and efficient vehicle trips. The Senior Software Engineer, Mapping will help evolve ALSO’s end-to-end navigation experience. The existing foundation includes a routing stack, cloud services, and mobile and on-vehicle integrations. This hands-on, high-autonomy role involves shipping new features and addressing gaps across routing engine internals, mobile apps, and the bike display. The engineer will collaborate with firmware, mobile, algorithms/ML, and product teams while independently taking work from idea through production. The position works across C++ routing-engine code, Python and JavaScript tooling and services, Swift and Kotlin mobile applications, and AWS infrastructure. It also involves mapping and routing operations, vehicle-specific behavior, BLE protocols, constrained displays, and real-world cases such as offline fallback, rerouting, device reconnections, and poor connectivity. The role contributes to routing quality, data analysis, code review, and documentation. The salary range is $165,000–$210,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and location. ALSO is located in the heart of Silicon Valley.

Requirements

  • Solid professional experience shipping production software.
  • Ability to learn and become productive in unfamiliar languages and layers of the stack.
  • Working proficiency in several of C++, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Swift, Kotlin, and Go.
  • Understanding of geospatial, mapping, and routing concepts, including map data, tiles, routing graphs, map matching, and geocoding.
  • Hands-on AWS experience with compute, containers, and storage, and comfort deploying and debugging personal services.
  • Track record of owning features end to end without close direction.
  • Good judgment on scope and tradeoffs, with a bias toward practical, working solutions.
  • Clear communication and documentation skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Valhalla, OSRM, or similar routing engines, or with Mapbox, HERE, TomTom, or Google Maps APIs.
  • Experience with BLE, GPS, embedded or firmware interfaces, GitLab CI/CD and runners, or mobile navigation apps.

Responsibilities

  • Build, test, deploy, and support navigation features and fixes in production from end to end.
  • Work across the stack, including C++ in the Valhalla-based routing engine, Python and JavaScript tooling and services, and Swift/Kotlin on iOS and Android.
  • Extend and operate mapping and routing infrastructure, including map data pipelines, tile and routing services, and vehicle-specific routing behavior.
  • Build and maintain AWS cloud services, including containers, storage, and deployments.
  • Work with firmware on BLE protocols and the bike’s constrained display, contributing to that layer as needed.
  • Handle real-world edge cases such as offline fallback, rerouting, device reconnects, and poor connectivity.
  • Partner with the algorithms/ML engineer on routing quality and data analysis.
  • Contribute to team practices through code review and documentation.
