Staff, Mapping Software Engineer

Lucid Motors•Newark, CA

About The Position

Lucid’s GeoAI team is building fleet-powered mapping infrastructure that learns from vehicle observations and automatically generates, validates, and updates map content. The Staff Mapping Engineer will lead development of large-scale mapping systems that use data from engineering fleets, FOT programs, and customer vehicles to create and maintain production-quality map assets. The role defines architecture and algorithms to turn large volumes of vehicle data into continuously improving lane-level maps, road graphs, localization maps, map-change detections, and spatial intelligence products for Navigation, ADAS, and Autonomous Driving. It requires deep expertise in mapping, large-scale optimization, SLAM, sensor fusion, and cloud-scale data processing.

Requirements

  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Robotics, Geospatial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of industry experience developing large-scale mapping, localization, SLAM, robotics, or autonomous driving systems.
  • Expert-level software development skills in C++ and Python.
  • Deep knowledge of SLAM, multi-view geometry, bundle adjustment, pose graph optimization, sensor fusion, state estimation, and geospatial systems.
  • Experience processing large-scale camera, LiDAR, GNSS, IMU, and vehicle telemetry datasets.
  • Experience building production cloud services and distributed processing pipelines.
  • Proven ability to lead complex technical initiatives across organizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with fleet-scale mapping systems at companies such as Tesla, Waymo, Cruise, Zoox, Rivian, Mobileye, HERE, TomTom, or Google.
  • Experience building crowdsourced mapping platforms using customer vehicle data.
  • Experience with HD map generation, lane graph construction, localization maps, and map lifecycle management.
  • Experience with map compilation, map distribution, and incremental map updates.
  • Experience with Spark, Ray, Kubernetes, AWS, Azure, or similar large-scale compute platforms.
  • Publications or patents related to mapping, localization, SLAM, or autonomous driving.

Responsibilities

  • Develop large-scale HD mapping systems using camera, LiDAR, GNSS/IMU, and vehicle telemetry data.
  • Build scalable pipelines that fuse observations from fleet-driven miles into unified, continuously improving maps.
  • Design multi-route and multi-vehicle map alignment, optimization, and crowdsourced mapping solutions.
  • Create automated pipelines to extract lane geometry, road boundaries, traffic controls, crosswalks, speed limits, and localization landmarks.
  • Develop confidence, validation, and quality-control frameworks for promoting verified observations into production maps.
  • Build automated map-change detection and update systems for evolving road networks.
  • Apply machine learning, Spatial AI, and foundation models to automate map creation, semantic understanding, anomaly detection, and map quality evaluation.
  • Drive innovation in self-supervised learning and fleet-scale mapping technologies.
  • Design and operate cloud-based mapping platforms capable of processing petabyte-scale fleet data.
  • Optimize distributed infrastructure for performance, scalability, reliability, and cost efficiency.
  • Establish engineering standards, validation frameworks, and operational monitoring for production mapping systems.
  • Mentor engineers and collaborate across teams to deliver end-to-end mapping solutions.
