About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack) will join an early-stage, AI-native German start-up building digital infrastructure for grant funding. Its platform combines AI-supported research, matching and application drafting with expert review to help non-profits and public organisations focus on their projects rather than funding administration. The engineering team is small, the product has real customer demand, and this is one of the company’s first engineering hires, with an opportunity to shape the product and engineering function. The role owns product and technical problems end-to-end, from conversations with the grant team through production, across the frontend, backend, infrastructure and the platform’s AI pipeline. The engineer works directly with the founders and closely with the grant-writing team, without designers or product managers in between. They are expected to take initiative, turn unclear business problems into plans, ship quickly, explain trade-offs to non-technical colleagues, and improve the product through iteration.

Requirements

  • At least 2 years working in a senior engineering role; total experience alone does not meet this criterion.
  • A track record of owning products or major features end-to-end.
  • Start-up or scale-up experience, including taking an unclear business problem without a detailed specification and quickly shipping a working solution.
  • Several years of professional experience with TypeScript and Node.js.
  • Solid PostgreSQL experience, including JSONB, query performance, and migrations.
  • Full-stack confidence with Next.js and React Query on the frontend, Express and BullMQ on the backend, and AWS (ECS, RDS) for infrastructure.
  • Hands-on experience building and running AI pipelines in production, beyond simply calling an API.
  • An AI-native working style, with tools such as Claude Code or Cursor used in daily work.
  • Clear written and spoken English, including the ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical colleagues.
  • High ownership: independently close problems, bring proposals rather than diagnoses, and work effectively without detailed direction.

Nice To Haves

  • German at B1 level or above; this is a plus, not a requirement.
  • Experience with AI agents and tool-calling workflows in production.
  • Experience with Terraform.

Responsibilities

  • Own features end-to-end, including the user interface, from discovery with the grant team through production.
  • Turn ambiguous business problems into clear technical plans, ship an initial version quickly, and iterate.
  • Advance the AI pipeline through prompt engineering, context management, cost control, and a multi-provider setup using AWS Bedrock, Anthropic, and OpenAI.
  • Build and own AI evaluation practices for prompt quality, model selection, and regression detection.
  • Operate, monitor, and debug the live production environment, including Sentry, CloudWatch, and Postgres performance.
  • Make architecture decisions and shape code quality, engineering standards, and the technical roadmap.
  • Build interfaces with a usability-first mindset for grant writers.
  • Shorten the time from starting a new project to a finished, submitted application through features, reliability, and automation.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation.
  • Professional development opportunities.
  • Supportive remote work culture.
