Senior Full Stack Software Engineer

ExTrac AI•Washington, DC

About The Position

ExTrac is a decision intelligence company serving governments, defence organisations, financial institutions, and corporates operating in complex, fast-moving environments. It combines curated data sources, domain-specific AI, and human expertise to turn information into actionable foresight. The Senior Software Engineer is a generalist role based in the Washington, DC area, working across backend services and the infrastructure they run on. The role spans building and operating Go or Python services, managing AWS infrastructure and deployment pipelines, and supporting reliability, observability, and security. The engineer will own workstreams from requirements and technical design through production delivery, while contributing to architecture discussions and improving systems based on operational experience. The role works closely with the Lead DevOps Engineer on US infrastructure priorities, partners with the UK backend team across time zones, and collaborates with analysts and product managers. It includes participation in incident response and post-incident reviews, as well as support for out-of-hours incidents via an on-call rota. The position offers increasing technical ownership and architectural influence, with a potential path toward a Lead Engineer role; individual contributor and management paths are valued equally. This is a remote position for someone located on the East Coast, with occasional travel to the DC area for collaborative working sessions. Applicants must be US nationals resident in the United States and able to maintain regular overlap with UK working hours, such as US Eastern mornings.

Requirements

  • Must be a US national resident in the United States.
  • At least 4 years of professional software engineering experience across backend development and cloud infrastructure, including owning production features end to end.
  • Proficiency building microservices using Go or Python.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS and infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines and automating deployment workflows.
  • Production experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, databases, and software engineering patterns.
  • Familiarity with monitoring, logging, and observability tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including clear technical writing and comfort working with a UK-based team.
  • Ability to work with regular overlap with UK hours, such as US Eastern mornings.
  • Able to work remotely from the East Coast and travel occasionally to the DC area for collaborative sessions.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain AWS infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform and CloudFormation.
  • Deploy, scale, and troubleshoot containerised production workloads using Docker, Kubernetes, and Argo.
  • Build and improve CI/CD pipelines to support safe, frequent releases across multiple environments.
  • Own workstreams from the US infrastructure roadmap through delivery.
  • Shape requirements with a lead, write technical designs, and deliver scoped solutions to production.
  • Develop and own Go and Python microservices for data collection, processing, and querying.
  • Design and maintain APIs used by internal teams and customers.
  • Contribute evidence-based input to system design and architecture discussions.
  • Instrument owned services and infrastructure using monitoring and observability tools such as Prometheus and Grafana.
  • Participate in incident response and post-incident reviews, and implement fixes that prevent recurrence.
  • Implement and maintain infrastructure and application controls supporting US compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP and CMMC.
  • Address security as a core engineering concern and advocate for resolving technical debt.
  • Provide out-of-hours incident support through an on-call rota.
  • Work with the Lead DevOps Engineer on US infrastructure priorities and collaborate with the UK backend team through code reviews, design discussions, and shared delivery.
