Senior Site Reliability Engineer (Systems Engineer III)

Ophelia
•$170,000 - $180,000•Remote

About The Position

Ophelia is a venture-backed healthcare startup that provides FDA-approved medication and clinical care for opioid use disorder through a discreet, convenient, and affordable telehealth platform. The Senior Site Reliability Engineer will own reliability, availability, and performance for the systems supporting this mission. The technology stack includes TypeScript, Node.js, React, Firebase (including Firestore, Authentication, and Hosting), Cloud Run, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The role will mature Ophelia’s existing stability and availability initiative by defining and operationalizing service level objectives and indicators, developing observability and incident response, expanding infrastructure as code, and addressing performance issues such as long-latency endpoints and Cloud Run cold starts. The engineer will own the mean time to recovery KPI and the measurement and reporting of availability KPIs, as well as the disaster recovery posture. In partnership with the head of IT, the role will support IAM hardening, secrets management, audit logging, and HIPAA/SOC 2 infrastructure controls. This senior engineer will help the fullstack team build GCP and DevOps capability through documentation, runbooks, pairing, presentations, and code review, and bring reliability recommendations into feature design. The role is entirely reliability-focused for the first six months; afterward, product work may be part of the role but will account for no more than about 25% of the time. Ophelia expects the engineer to use AI tools fluently in their workflow, incorporate AI into operational tooling, and help the technology team use AI responsibly and effectively. The position is suited to someone who can independently drive ambiguous projects in a remote, growth-stage environment, communicate proactively, and adapt as priorities evolve. Healthcare or treatment-area experience is not mandatory, but familiarity with healthcare outcomes, systems, benchmarks, and regulatory compliance is beneficial.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of engineering experience, including at least 3 years in cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE-focused work.
  • Expert-level hands-on GCP fluency, including Cloud Run, Cloud Operations (Logging, Monitoring, and alerting), IAM, and Firebase/Firestore.
  • Expertise in at least one language used for infrastructure automation, such as Python, and strong shell scripting skills.
  • Ability to read and debug TypeScript/Node.js code.
  • Production operations experience, including on-call participation, incident response leadership, postmortem writing, and defining SLOs in keeping with Google SRE practice.
  • Quantitative fluency in production systems, including percentiles and tail latency, SLO and error-budget calculations, burn-rate alerting, and interpreting time series and histograms.
  • Senior-level ownership and communication skills, including end-to-end ownership of complex, ambiguous projects with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Clear, proactive communication and a habit of documenting work through runbooks, postmortems, and design documents, and pairing to share knowledge.
  • Daily hands-on use of AI tools in engineering work and experience building automation with them.

Nice To Haves

  • Terraform fluency is strongly preferred.
  • SQL for BigQuery and Log Analytics is a plus.
  • Experience at a growth-stage company with bespoke systems.
  • Passion for making evidence-based addiction treatment universally accessible.
  • Experience in a regulated industry, ideally healthcare or telehealth, with hands-on implementation of HIPAA or SOC 2 infrastructure controls.

Responsibilities

  • Own reliability, availability, and performance of the GCP platform; define and operationalize SLOs and SLIs, and drive improvements to endpoint latency, Cloud Run cold starts, and recovery time.
  • Own the disaster recovery posture, including Firestore backup and restore testing, recovery point and recovery time objectives, and multi-region resilience.
  • Extend GCP Cloud Operations with log-based metrics, alerting policies, and dashboards.
  • Move alerting from Slack to PagerDuty, participate in the team’s on-call rotation, and mature incident categorization, escalation paths, and AI-assisted level-one triage.
  • Expand Terraform beyond observability metrics and ephemeral pull request environments to the rest of the GCP configuration.
  • Improve the GitHub Actions CI/CD pipeline to make frequent deployments safer and faster.
  • Partner with the head of IT to harden security and compliance controls, including IAM, secrets management, and audit logging.
  • Own the MTTR KPI and the measurement and reporting of availability KPIs.
  • Develop the team’s GCP and DevOps skills through presentations, documentation, runbooks, pairing, and code review.
  • Bring reliability recommendations to new features early, share reusable AI skills and automation, and promote operational excellence.
  • Drive projects from inception to impact with autonomy and proactive communication, adapting to evolving priorities and keeping current with reliability, cloud infrastructure, and AI tooling practices.
  • Use AI tools in engineering work, build AI into operational tooling, and help shape responsible and effective AI use across the technology team.

Benefits

  • Medical, vision, and health insurance, with many plans fully covered for the employee.
  • 20 days (four weeks) of PTO initially, increasing to five weeks after two years and six weeks after five years of tenure.
  • 10 company holidays.
  • Work from home stipend.
  • 401(k) contribution platform.
  • Additional benefits through the benefits provider, including life insurance, short- and long-term disability, financial wellness, and virtual primary care.
