About The Position

Altos Labs is seeking a highly motivated, creative, and collaborative Senior Scientist I / II to join the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Drug Discovery and Development Sciences team. The role focuses on restoring cell health and resilience to reverse disease, injury, and disabilities. This position is ideal for candidates who have completed their Residency Training Program and graduate studies and are seeking practical, hands-on experience, mentorship, and career development. The Senior Scientist will work closely with the Senior Director of Pathology and cross-functional team members to deliver high-quality pathology data that informs target selection, translational strategy, safety assessment, and development decisions. The role involves collaboration with the early research function, Discovery Science, in a dynamic environment. The Senior Scientist will be an integral part of discovery and translational project teams, guiding preclinical investigative strategy, qualifying drug targets, understanding drug pharmacologic mechanisms, and connecting basic biology to systemic disease pathophysiology. Collaboration with cross-functional teams will aid in disease model selection and characterization, biomarker discovery, and data interpretation. Scientific curiosity and adaptability to evolving technology and pipeline priorities are key requirements.

Requirements

  • Strong pathology background of appropriate scientific training
  • 3Rs-centered, welfare-oriented approach to animal-based research
  • Typically have 7 years + experience (including education and residency training)
  • Clear and influential communicator, with the ability to give and receive feedback to improve on outcomes and impact
  • Strong demonstrable influencing skills that demonstrate strong thought partnership and judgement, which creates effective relationships with internal and external groups and individuals
  • Strong scientific aptitude and ability to implement investigative strategies to elucidate mechanisms of pharmacology and toxicology
  • A critical thinker with the ability to analyze possibilities and solutions and make pragmatic trade-offs
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and formal pathology residency training (DACVP or DECVP certification or eligibility)
  • PhD in Pathology or closely related discipline highly desirable
  • Demonstrable understanding of how to work effectively in cross-functional research teams

Responsibilities

  • Work closely in project teams including basic science and early researchers to understand target biology paying particular attention to how molecular mechanisms could drive disease pathophysiology at the tissue and organism level
  • Build strong trusting partnerships, working closely on the research and deep science, supporting the bridge from basic science to humans.
  • Perform detailed histological evaluations of tissue samples to identify compound-related treatment effects, including toxicity and pharmacology
  • Contribute to the design of in-vivo studies and provide clinical pathology and histopathological data interpretation
  • Work with Discovery Sciences and In Vivo Translational Sciences to identify and characterize disease model systems
  • Guide the development of novel molecular pathology assays and digital image analysis algorithms
  • Contributes to a team culture that promotes continuous improvement, ownership, professional growth, and inclusion
  • Contribute to the cross-functional to the creation and review of study reports
