Senior Product Designer

Watney•San Francisco, CA

About The Position

Watney builds and deploys autonomous robotic systems to increase the speed and capacity of critical infrastructure buildout, starting with data centers. Product designers shape how people interact with its robots and supporting systems. The work spans controls for robot pilots, tools for engineers to explore data, and applications teams use to coordinate work across a fleet. The Senior Product Designer will work closely with engineers and operators to understand complex workflows and make them intuitive. The role involves considering what users need to see, understand, and control, and carrying those decisions through to interface details. Work crosses software and physical interactions, including teleoperation controls, scheduling, and task management.

Requirements

  • Experience designing tools that make complex systems easier to understand and work with.
  • Curiosity about unfamiliar technical domains and willingness to learn enough to question how things should work.
  • Careful thinking about interaction, information hierarchy, and feedback, with attention to craft and interface details.
  • Enjoyment of close collaboration with engineers and designing for technical users.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with developer tools, CAD, creative software, or hardware interfaces.
  • Ability to build prototypes in code.

Responsibilities

  • Work with teleoperators, field operators, and engineers to understand shortcomings in their tools and rethink how those tools could work.
  • Design interfaces for teleoperation, data exploration, annotation, and fleet coordination, supporting a deployed fleet scaling to thousands of robots next year.
  • Build and test prototypes with the people using the tools, including data annotators, robotics researchers, and fleet managers.
  • Work with engineers to ship designs and refine them based on their use in the field.
