Senior Product Designer

Apollo GraphQL•San Francisco, CA
•$145,000 - $165,000

About The Position

Apollo GraphQL is hiring a Senior Product Designer to help make it easier for engineering teams to build and ship reliable products and services on top of data. Apollo supports large GraphQL APIs and is developing products for agentic experiences, where design will help make graph traversal and access controls usable. Designers are assigned to high-leverage problems, with priorities set quarterly. Current areas include developer onboarding, core product interfaces, the design system, and emerging agentic products. Working alongside the Head of Design, this designer will own well-scoped problem areas end to end: understand users and the systems behind their needs, shape an initial version with engineering, and ship polished, usable experiences. The role calls for a clear point of view and contributions to the team’s design craft.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years designing software, with a focus on product or UX design.
  • A portfolio of shipped work.
  • Experience designing complex products, ideally for technical users in areas such as developer tools, infrastructure, data, security, identity, or APIs.
  • A track record of owning features or workflows end to end, from discovery through shipping.
  • Strong visual design, interaction, and craft skills.
  • Comfort working through ambiguity within a defined problem area.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience shipping developer-focused experiences, API tooling, or agent experiences.
  • Experience contributing to a design system and knowing when to work outside it.
  • Use of AI tools to prototype and explore ideas faster.
  • An engineering background or comfort working in code.
  • Curiosity about developer tools and AI agents.
  • Comfort thinking through a whole user journey as well as detailed interactions.
  • San Francisco Bay Area location preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Own design for defined workflows in developer tools, from discovery through shipped experience.
  • Partner day to day with engineers and product managers to shape what gets built and provide a point of view on scope and trade-offs.
  • Scope initial versions that deliver value quickly, then iterate based on usage and feedback.
  • Design states, edge cases, errors, and permissions that help make technical products trustworthy.
  • Contribute reusable patterns and components to the design system and help migrate product surfaces onto it.
  • Use AI tools to prototype and test ideas quickly, and run lightweight usability tests when the cost of being wrong is high.
  • Tie design work to outcomes such as task completion, developer activation, or fewer support tickets caused by confusing flows.
