Senior Platform Software Engineer II

Braze•New York, NY

About The Position

The Senior Platform Software Engineer II builds, maintains, and evolves Braze’s internal infrastructure-as-a-service platform. The role applies software engineering principles, operational discipline, and automation to infrastructure services, moving deployment and operations expertise into software. The team improves infrastructure reliability and enables engineering teams across Braze to use its infrastructure products and platforms. Braze operates at large scale and uses technologies including Ruby on Rails, MongoDB, Redis, Kafka, and Kubernetes. The position focuses on internal software frameworks for asynchronous and background processing, including systems built on technologies such as Sidekiq. The engineer owns these systems’ scaling behavior, reliability guarantees, failure modes, operational safety, observability, and usability, while providing abstractions and safeguards that help application teams use distributed processing safely. The role also develops IaaS services, common tooling, and automation that support operations and capacity management. It includes participation in a PagerDuty rotation, incident response, and turning incident learnings into system improvements. For U.S.-based candidates, the stated starting base pay range is $156,364–$250,909 per year, with expected on-target earnings of $172,000–$276,000 per year, including bonus or commission. Offers may vary based on factors including location, knowledge, skills, and experience. The role may also include restricted stock unit equity grants. Braze describes its work model as hybrid and offers location-dependent benefits.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of full-stack development experience.
  • Think in terms of systems, including interfaces, boundaries, edge cases, failure modes, behaviors, and implementations.
  • Collaborate, document work, and deliver quickly, including across globally distributed remote teams working asynchronously.
  • Experience working on large-scale API-driven systems.
  • Experience with application and systems observability.
  • Experience building or automating Kubernetes-based operators and custom resources.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and expectations at once.
  • Enthusiastic, proactive approach to identifying and fixing problems, and interest in automating everyday software engineering toil.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with engineering teams to define and implement infrastructure-as-a-service products that help teams build and deploy more quickly.
  • Improve monitoring and alerting so they identify symptoms rather than merely outages.
  • Help ensure Braze meets its enterprise-grade customer SLAs.
  • Develop embedded frameworks that enable large-scale distributed processing.
  • Design, build, and operate internal software frameworks that power asynchronous and background processing systems at scale.
  • Evolve and extend frameworks such as Sidekiq to execute jobs reliably across a globally distributed platform.
  • Own the scaling behavior, reliability guarantees, failure modes, and operational safety of distributed processing systems.
  • Provide abstractions, tooling, and guardrails that allow application teams to use distributed processing safely without managing underlying complexity.
  • Improve observability, debuggability, and operational ergonomics for large-scale job-processing systems.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain software services that provide custom infrastructure services.
  • Provide centralized tooling, services, and automation frameworks that support scaling operations and capacity management.
  • Build automation into the IaaS platform to reduce operational pain and improve engineering teams’ day-to-day workflows.
  • Participate in a PagerDuty rotation to respond to availability incidents and support other engineers.
  • Use on-call shifts to prevent future incidents.
  • Conduct retrospectives and turn incident learnings into system improvements, changes, and automation.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation that may include equity.
  • Retirement and Employee Stock Purchase Plans.
  • Flexible paid time off.
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability benefit plans.
  • Fertility benefits and equal paid parental leave.
  • Professional development through formal career pathing, learning platforms, and a yearly learning stipend.
  • Curated in-office employee experience designed to foster community, team connections, and innovation.
  • Opportunities to give back through an annual company-wide Volunteer Week and donation matching.
