About The Position

Under general direction, the Senior Piping Drafting/Design professional performs moderately difficult design assignments requiring advanced design techniques in accordance with company and industry standards and codes. Most assignments are performed with minimal guidance. The role is an intermediate-level design position requiring a sound understanding of design concepts with minimal engineering input and proficiency in manual and computer-assisted techniques for moderately difficult design applications. The position establishes design criteria for assigned project phases; prepares detailed and layout drawings and sketches for unusual, complex, or original designs; reviews manufacturers’ and fabricators’ prints for conformance with contract specifications; and supports project engineers and field assignments. The role also provides design sketches and guidance to lower-level personnel, checks their work, and regularly interfaces with other departments, clients, vendors, and project engineers. Related support may include procedures, specifications, engineering data, estimating, manpower planning, drawing schedules, task assignments, and conceptual input during project planning. The normal work environment is a business office with moderate noise. Occasional visits or temporary assignments at operating plants or construction sites may involve outdoor weather, loud noise, moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals, and airborne particles. The job may require field trips involving standing, walking, reaching, climbing, balancing, and lifting up to 25 pounds.

Requirements

  • Normally requires high school graduation with vocational-technical training in basic drafting technology and typically at least seven years of related experience or equivalent working knowledge/experience; alternatively, a two-year degree in drafting/design technology and five years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated sound understanding of design concepts with minimal engineering input.
  • Proficiency in manual and computer-assisted techniques for moderately difficult design applications.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, and to present information and respond to questions from clients, managers, designers, and engineers.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts including proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume, and apply basic algebra and geometry.
  • Field work may require normal hearing; standing, walking, reaching, climbing, and balancing; clear close and distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus; and lifting up to 25 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Establish design criteria for assigned project phases using basic engineering principles, material properties, and familiarity with construction, installation, and maintenance procedures.
  • Prepare detail and layout drawings and sketches for unusual, complex, or original designs, including determining material needs and performing necessary calculations.
  • Review manufacturers’ or fabricators’ prints for conformance with contract specifications.
  • Provide lower-level design/drafting personnel with design sketches, finished-drawing guidance, general layouts, and direction in refining technical requirements.
  • Support field assignments and lead field walkdowns as required.
  • Check work assigned to lower-level design/drafting personnel.
  • Interface with other departments, clients, vendors, and project engineers to support project production.
  • Support the project engineer with tasks such as writing procedures and specifications, compiling and computing engineering data, and estimating.
  • Perform administrative tasks as needed, such as determining manpower requirements, establishing drawing schedules, and assigning tasks to lower-level design/drafting personnel.
  • Provide conceptual input to projects during planning stages when needed.
