Under general direction, the Piping Design Lead performs moderately difficult design assignments requiring advanced design techniques in accordance with company and industry standards and codes. Most assignments are completed with minimal guidance. This senior-level design role requires a sound understanding of design concepts with minimal engineering input and proficiency in manual and computer-assisted techniques for moderately difficult design applications. The position is responsible for a group of designers and drafters assigned to a project or specialized field. It establishes design criteria for assigned project phases, provides conceptual input during planning, and prepares detailed and layout drawings for complex or original designs. The role provides technical direction and reviews work by lower-level design/drafting personnel, supports field assignments and walkdowns, and regularly coordinates with other departments, clients, vendors, and the project engineer. It also performs complex, non-routine project support and administrative tasks. The position normally requires high school graduation with vocational-technical drafting training and typically at least eight years of related experience, or a two-year drafting/design technology degree and six years of related experience. The work is primarily in a business office with occasional visits or temporary assignments at operating plants or construction sites.
