About The Position

Under general direction, the Senior Piping Drafting/Design professional performs moderately difficult design assignments requiring advanced design techniques in accordance with company and industry standards and codes. Most assignments are performed with minimal guidance. The role is described as an intermediate-level design position requiring a sound understanding of design concepts and proficiency with manual and computer-assisted techniques for moderately difficult design applications, with minimal engineering input. The position establishes design criteria for assigned project phases and prepares detailed and layout drawings for unusual, complex, or original designs. It regularly interfaces with other departments, clients, vendors, and project engineers, supports field assignments, and may guide and check work performed by lower-level design/drafting personnel. It may also support project engineering through procedures, specifications, engineering data, estimates, and administrative coordination. The normal work setting is a business office with moderate noise. Occasional visits or temporary assignments at operating plants or construction sites may involve outdoor weather, loud noise, moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals, and airborne particles.

Requirements

High school graduation with vocational-technical training in basic drafting technology and typically at least seven years of related experience or equivalent working knowledge/experience; alternatively, a two-year degree in drafting/design technology and five years of related experience.
Sound understanding of design concepts with minimal engineering input.
Proficiency in manual and computer-assisted techniques for moderately difficult design applications.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
Ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from clients, managers, designers, and engineers.
Ability to calculate figures and amounts including proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume, and apply basic algebra and geometry.
For occasional field trips, ability to hear normally; stand, walk, reach, climb, and balance; and use clear close and distance vision, depth perception, and focusing ability.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds may be required.

Responsibilities

Establish design criteria for assigned project phases using basic engineering principles, material properties, and familiarity with construction, installation, and maintenance procedures.
Prepare detail and layout drawings and sketches for unusual, complex, or original designs using theoretical and practical engineering knowledge.
Determine material needs and perform necessary calculations using accepted formulas and references.
Review manufacturers' or fabricators' prints for conformance with contract specifications.
Provide lower-level design/drafting personnel with design sketches, finished-drawing preparation guidance, general layouts, and direction on refining technical requirements.
Support field assignments and lead field walkdowns when required.
Check work assigned to lower-level design/drafting personnel.
Interface with other departments, clients, vendors, and project engineers to support project production.
Support the project engineer with related tasks, including writing procedures and specifications, compiling and computing engineering data, and estimating.
Perform administrative tasks when needed, such as determining manpower requirements, establishing drawing schedules, and assigning tasks to lower-level design/drafting personnel.
Provide conceptual input to projects during planning stages when needed.
