About The Position

ASML is seeking a Mechatronics / Robotics Design Engineer for its development location in Wilton, Connecticut. The engineer specifies, designs, develops, realizes, integrates, and tests modules and tools as part of a multidisciplinary team, working with cross-functional partners and suppliers to meet system specifications, cost targets, and schedules. The role provides discipline-specific expertise across the product life cycle, from concept feasibility and new product introduction to product sustainment and customer-facing problem resolution. Its primary focus is mechatronics and control systems for advanced lithography-tool modules, including precision handling, product and system integration, and software functionality. The position takes technical ownership of complex module components and solutions, accounting for industrialization and cross-team impacts. Work includes designing custom mechatronic systems and controls, integrating industrial robotics into capital equipment, developing and executing validation and verification approaches, and resolving equipment issues. The role also involves coordinating interfaces with suppliers and other disciplines, documenting specifications and test results, and guiding peers through technical execution. The scope of leadership and ownership increases with job grade. The position is located on-site and requires in-person attendance for work-related events, training, and meetings. A flexible workplace arrangement allows remote work up to two days per week. Travel may be required depending on business needs. Work may involve exposure to strong magnetic fields, high voltage, and currents. Candidates must be legally authorized to access controlled technology before beginning work.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Engineering degree in a relevant technical field.
  • At least 4 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience designing and testing mechatronic and control systems; experience with industrial robotics integration is preferred.
  • Ability to identify, analyze, document, and manage requirements with traceability and translate them into clear specifications.
  • Ability to develop engineering concepts, make sound technical tradeoffs, resolve issues, and realize designs that meet system or module requirements.
  • Ability to plan and execute verification and validation and support system or product integration.
  • Ability to coordinate dependencies and apply configuration management and traceability.
  • Ability to derive conclusions from analyses and make practical recommendations.
  • Strong technical writing and English communication skills, including presenting results based on statistical evidence to audiences with varied technical backgrounds.
  • Ability to translate goals into priorities and execution plans, take ownership, manage trade-offs, and deliver results on time and to the required quality.
  • Ability to seek and use feedback, adapt behavior, and collaborate effectively in complex or ambiguous environments.
  • Ability to respect and integrate diverse perspectives and working styles and foster inclusive collaboration.
  • Ability to align team goals, roles, dependencies, and ways of working; promote trust, open dialogue, and mutual accountability; and coach colleagues.
  • Ability to translate broader direction into priorities and practical next steps and maintain focus on shared outcomes.
  • Legal authorization to access controlled technology, as defined in the U.S. Export Administration Regulations, before beginning work.
  • Ability to perform the stated physical activities, including sitting, walking, using hands to operate a keyboard and handle objects, and occasionally moving around campus and lifting or moving up to 20 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree.
  • Mechatronics engineering background or specialization in robotics or a closely related field.
  • Experience with PID controllers, linear and nonlinear calibrations, and flexible dynamics.
  • Experience designing complex mechanisms such as robot grippers.
  • Basic experience with predictive modeling of mechatronic behavior using MATLAB/Simulink or similar tools, including first-principles engineering equations and dynamic-system simulation and implementation.
  • Ability to apply classical and digital control theory, including frequency-domain analysis, stability analysis, Nyquist and Bode plots, velocity-acceleration-jerk, feedback and feedforward, dynamics, gain and phase, transfer functions, continuous and discrete feedback control, and real-time controls.
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary projects such as imaging or optical systems, semiconductor, or lithography.

Responsibilities

  • Develop complex module components and deliver technically complex solutions with ownership, considering industrialization and cross-team impacts.
  • Collaborate across teams, lead interfaces with suppliers and other disciplines, and guide peers through technical execution.
  • Design and develop custom mechatronics systems, including translating stages, rotary motion, multi-link positioners, sensors, servos, and actuators.
  • Design path-optimization algorithms and associated controls for end products.
  • Analyze and improve the dynamic disturbance response of robotic systems.
  • Perform sustaining engineering and resolve equipment design issues arising at customer sites.
  • Participate in concept designs and experiments for future equipment and subsystems.
  • Apply Six Sigma and lean process techniques to design robust, quality products.
  • Work with external suppliers and internal cross-disciplinary teams on new product design.
  • Perform root-cause analysis and troubleshoot from system to component level.
  • Define and document specifications, design decisions, and operating procedures for a clean manufacturing environment.
  • Develop and implement product validation and verification strategies.
  • Integrate industrial robotics control systems into capital equipment, including dynamics, end-effector design, and controls.
  • Troubleshoot designs to identify risks and failure modes and determine corrective actions.
  • Operate complex mechatronic systems to test and qualify design changes.
  • Design, develop, and build product-specific test tooling.
  • Validate and verify product requirements, and document test procedures and reports.
  • Identify, analyze, document, and manage requirements with traceability, and coordinate verification criteria.
  • Conduct research and feasibility studies, document findings, and translate results into recommendations and decision inputs.
  • Develop engineering concepts and solutions, make technical choices, and resolve issues within functionality, performance, cost, compliance, and schedule constraints.
  • Define and communicate specifications and high-level designs, align interfaces, and support reviews and approvals.
  • Support system or product integration by coordinating dependencies and applying configuration management.
  • Define and execute validation and test approaches, improve methods and procedures, and ensure qualification evidence supports release readiness.
  • Estimate effort, plan and track work, manage risks and dependencies, and deliver work packages or projects to agreed quality and timelines.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation and share knowledge through coaching and mentoring as applicable.
  • Follow EHS policies and identify and mitigate safety risks.
