Senior Mechanical Engineer (On-site)

Standard Bots•Boston, MA
•$150,000 - $195,000•Onsite

About The Position

Standard Bots is hiring two Senior Mechanical Engineers to own major subsystems of Bolt, a mobile manipulation platform consisting of an autonomous mobile base carrying robot arms. Subsystems may include the chassis, drivetrain and suspension, wheel modules, battery mounting, control box, compute, and safety hardware, including thermal management, cabling, and service access. Engineers will take their subsystems from concept through prototype builds, testing, and production release, working hands-on in the shop and lab. This is an on-site role at Standard Bots’ Boston-area office, where Bolt is designed, built, and tested. There is some flexibility in office days once the employee is up to speed. The office has a build area, electronics lab, test floor, and production robots. The ideal candidate expects to spend approximately 60% of their time on design and analysis and 40% on builds, testing, and manufacturing support.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 5 years designing, building, and testing electromechanical products, including designs taken through production release.
  • Strong knowledge of structures and mechanisms, including load paths, stiffness and fatigue, bearings and drivetrain components, fasteners and joints, and tolerance analysis.
  • Experience with design for manufacturing for sheet metal, castings, machining, weldments, and injection molding, including understanding process costs and failure modes.
  • Ability to perform hand calculations and use finite element analysis appropriately, size parts, and defend the calculations.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, including parts, large assemblies, drawings, and simulation, and familiarity with a PDM/PLM release process.
  • Ability to produce clear design documentation and trade studies and lead effective design reviews.
  • A practical, impact-driven approach focused on reliable, manufacturable hardware that ships.
  • Ability to thrive on a fast-moving team with changing requirements and tight timelines.
  • Experience shipping electromechanical hardware for real-world use, such as a mobile robot, vehicle, industrial machine, or similar.

Nice To Haves

  • AMR/AGV, vehicle, or drivetrain design experience, including suspension and wheel module design, caster and tire selection, or stability analysis.
  • Thermal management experience with power electronics and compute, cable and harness routing, or EMC-aware mechanical design for control boxes.
  • Battery pack packaging and thermal management experience.
  • Exposure to safety certifications or standards such as ISO 3691-4, ANSI/RIA R15.08, or ISO 13849.

Responsibilities

  • Own Bolt subsystem design from requirements through production release, including concept development, detailed design, analysis, drawings, and release.
  • Run trade studies to establish subsystem architecture, covering structure and material choices, stiffness and fatigue targets, thermal and ingress-protection strategy, serviceability, and cost; coordinate decisions with electrical engineering, software, and safety.
  • Perform hands-on SolidWorks design, hand calculations, finite element analysis, tolerance stackups, and design for manufacturing for sheet metal, castings, machined parts, weldments, and plastics; build and test prototypes.
  • Define and run subsystem tests, including static and dynamic loads, vibration, drop, thermal, and ingress tests, and use results to improve the design.
  • Serve as the technical contact for subsystem fabricators, drive design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly feedback, and support production issues.
  • Lead subsystem design reviews and mentor junior engineers.

Benefits

  • Paid time off.
  • Medical insurance.
  • Dental insurance.
  • Vision insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • Disability insurance.
  • 401(k).
