Mechanical Engineer (On-site)

Standard Bots•Boston, MA
•$95,000 - $125,000•Onsite

About The Position

Standard Bots is hiring two early-career Mechanical Engineers for Bolt, a mobile manipulation platform consisting of an autonomous mobile base carrying robot arms. One engineer will work on the upper body, including structures, mounts, and covers that support the arms, sensors, and payload. The other will support the electrical team and proof-of-concept builds through brackets, enclosures, harness routing, test fixtures, and quick-turn prototype parts. Engineers will design in SolidWorks, build their designs, and test them on real robots. This is an on-site role at Standard Bots' Boston-area office, where Bolt is designed, built, and tested. Some flexibility on office days may be available once the employee is up to speed. The role works near the build area, electronics lab, and test floor. Relocation assistance is available. The position suits an early-career engineer with hands-on hardware experience who wants to work directly with physical robots in a fast-moving environment. The base salary range is $95,000 to $125,000, depending on experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • 0–3 years of hands-on hardware experience; internships and project teams count.
  • Solid grasp of statics, strength of materials, materials selection, and GD&T basics.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks parts, assemblies, and drawings.
  • Comfort with a 3D printer, basic machine tools, and hand tools.
  • Experience assembling, testing, and debugging a physical system, with work that can be demonstrated.
  • Clear written communication for test notes and design summaries, and willingness to ask for help early.
  • Eagerness to learn new domains and context quickly.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving team with changing requirements and tight timelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Robotics, AMR/AGV, or vehicle project experience.
  • Basic electrical skills, such as reading schematics, wiring, crimping, and soldering.
  • Python or scripting for test data.
  • Exposure to sheet metal and machining design for manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Design parts and assemblies in SolidWorks, including sheet metal, machined parts, 3D prints, and off-the-shelf hardware, and release drawings with appropriate tolerances and callouts.
  • Build and test prototypes by ordering parts, assembling and instrumenting them, running tests, and documenting results.
  • Perform first-pass engineering analysis, including loads, stress, deflection, and fastener sizing, and identify when deeper review is needed.
  • Support cross-functional builds with electrical engineering, software, and test teams, including fixtures, mounts, cable routing, and quick fixes on the floor.
  • Maintain accurate BOMs, drawings, and PDM records through rapid design iterations.
  • Assemble and disassemble robots to learn the product and identify failure points.

Benefits

  • Employee stock options for all full-time employees.
  • Paid time off.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • Disability insurance.
