Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer (On-site)

Standard Bots•Boston, MA
•$160,000 - $220,000•Onsite

About The Position

Standard Bots is hiring a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead mechanical design for Bolt, its autonomous mobile manipulation platform. The role owns the platform’s mechanical architecture—including the chassis, drivetrain, battery and power-electronics packaging, control box, and arm-to-base structure—from concept through a certified fleet. Reporting to the hardware lead, the engineer will take on complex design work directly while guiding mechanical engineers through prototype builds, testing, and production release. The anticipated time allocation is approximately 60% design and analysis and 40% mentoring, planning, collaboration, builds, and testing. This is an on-site role at either the Boston-area office or the Glen Cove, New York factory, with some flexibility on office days after the employee is up to speed. The sites include build, electronics, testing, and production facilities. The position works across software, electrical engineering, safety, product, functional safety, and manufacturing, and contributes to safety certification and build and service strategy.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 10 years of product design experience, including a mobile robot, AMR/AGV, or similar electromechanical vehicle shipped at scale.
  • Mastery of structures and mechanisms, including load-path design, fatigue, stiffness, bearings and drivetrain components, sheet metal and casting design, and tolerance analysis.
  • Ability to perform hand calculations and use FEA appropriately, and to size components such as a frame, wheel module, or battery mount and defend the calculations.
  • Expertise in SolidWorks, including parts, large assemblies, drawings, and simulation, and familiarity with PDM/PLM release processes.
  • Experience leading engineers through an NPI cycle and providing direct, specific design feedback.
  • Ability to produce clear design documentation, concise trade studies, and effective design reviews that advance decisions.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving team with changing requirements and tight timelines.
  • A hands-on leadership approach, working on design alongside the team.

Nice To Haves

  • AMR safety certification experience, including ISO 3691-4, ANSI/RIA R15.08, or ISO 13849.
  • Battery-pack mechanical design, thermal management, and IP-rated enclosure experience.
  • Experience designing for low- to mid-volume production (hundreds to thousands of units per year) and field service.
  • Mobile manipulation or collaborative robot arm experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own the mechanical architecture of the Bolt platform, including the chassis and frame, drivetrain and suspension, battery and power-electronics packaging, control box, and arm-to-base interface.
  • Lead concept trade studies covering payload, center of gravity and tip stability, drive configuration, battery capacity, serviceability, and cost, and drive decisions to closure with software, electrical engineering, safety, and product teams.
  • Perform detailed mechanical design in SolidWorks, load-case analysis and hand calculations, FEA, tolerance stackups, and design for manufacturing for sheet metal, castings, machined parts, and weldments.
  • Plan and run prototype builds and a test program to demonstrate durability, stability, and performance ahead of safety certification.
  • Guide and mentor the mechanical engineers working on Bolt, run mechanical design reviews, and establish standards for drawings, analysis, and release.
  • Partner with Functional Safety on mechanical aspects of certification, including ISO 3691-4, ANSI R15.08, and ISO 10218.
  • Partner with manufacturing on build and service strategy.

Benefits

  • Employee stock options for all full-time employees.
  • Paid time off.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • Disability insurance.
  • 401(k).
