Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer

Boston Dynamics•Waltham, MA
•$135,000 - $167,000

About The Position

Boston Dynamics is seeking a Senior Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the transition of high-performance actuator products from architecture to robust, mass-production hardware for next-generation humanoid robotic platforms. The role combines complex mechanical design and industrialization, developing and integrating high-torque-density electromechanical systems for the Atlas team. The engineer will provide technical leadership for specific actuator product lines, ensuring designs meet performance and reliability targets while supporting the professional growth of design engineers through production release.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Typically 7 or more years of electromechanical product design and launch experience.
  • Track record of bringing complex electromechanical assemblies from architecture through production release in high-rigor environments such as automotive, aerospace, or medical devices.
  • High proficiency in 3D CAD and PLM, with a commitment to detailed documentation, GD&T, and tolerance stack analysis.
  • Ability to resolve ambiguous design challenges and balance innovation with practical manufacturing constraints.
  • Experience leading cross-functional efforts and building alignment across technical teams through collaboration and clear communication.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.
  • Ability to travel internationally 5%-10% to support the global supplier and partner network.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with CATIA.

Responsibilities

  • Guide the mechanical design and release of actuator products, overseeing technical execution from initial architecture through manufacturing.
  • Facilitate CAD completion and lead the creation of comprehensive drawing packages, using advanced GD&T and 1D/3D tolerance analysis.
  • Partner with suppliers and manufacturing teams to optimize designs for assembly, cost, and long-term reliability.
  • Support and mentor early-career and mid-level engineers through technical guidance and design reviews, fostering an inclusive team environment.
  • Manage technical risk through FMEAs, validation planning, and due diligence on moving assemblies, including gears, bearings, seals, and shafts.
