Senior Staff Electrical Engineer (On-site)

Standard Bots•Boston, MA
•$160,000 - $220,000•Onsite

About The Position

Standard Bots is seeking a Senior Staff Electrical Engineer to lead the hardware for Bolt, a mobile manipulation platform consisting of an autonomous mobile base carrying robot arms. The role leads hardware development from concept through a safety-certified fleet, establishing the hardware architecture and guiding mechanical and electrical engineers through prototype builds, testing, and certification. The engineer also personally owns the power system, including specifying and integrating a battery pack and charger from a battery manufacturer and designing high-current distribution, pre-charge and protection, safe power cutoff, and power delivery to drive motors, arms, and compute. This role is based on-site at either the Boston-area office or the Glen Cove, New York factory, with some flexibility on office days after onboarding. The on-site facilities include an electronics lab, build area, and test floor. The ideal candidate has taken an AMR or comparable mobile robot from initial design through safety certification and production, and has personally designed and shipped its battery-powered systems. The role is expected to be split roughly equally between design, build, and troubleshooting work and team leadership, testing, and certification. The base salary range is $160,000 to $220,000, depending on experience. Full-time employees are eligible for employee stock options. Benefits offered to regular full-time employees include paid time off, medical, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, and a 401(k).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 10+ years designing, building, and testing power systems and PCBAs.
  • Experience leading hardware for an AMR, AGV, or similar mobile robot through production.
  • Experience taking an AMR or similar mobile machine through third-party safety certification, including ISO 3691-4, ANSI/RIA R15.08, UL 3100, ISO 13849 safety functions, evidence packages, and test-lab campaigns.
  • Mastery of high-current distribution, pre-charge and protection circuits, DC/DC conversion, motor-drive power stages, and regenerative-current and bus-capacitance behavior.
  • Working knowledge of BMS behavior, including balancing, SoC/SoH, protection limits, and CAN interfaces, and experience specifying, qualifying, and integrating a vendor pack and charger.
  • Working knowledge of IEC 62133 and UL 2271 at the pack interface and EMC (IEC 61000 series), including pre-compliance debugging.
  • Experience leading engineers through an NPI cycle and providing direct, specific design feedback.
  • Proficiency in Altium Designer for schematic capture and multilayer, high-current layout.
  • Proficiency with LTspice or similar simulation tools and Python for test automation.
  • Strong debugging skills using a scope, current probe, thermal camera, and bench instruments; ability to document findings and converge on fixes.
  • Clear design documentation, crisp trade studies, and effective design reviews.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving team with changing requirements and tight timelines.

Nice To Haves

  • Mechanical design experience with mobile robots, including chassis, drivetrain, or battery packaging.
  • Custom battery pack design experience, including cell selection, pack mechanical and thermal design, and BMS hardware.
  • Motor control experience, including FOC and current sensing, and inverter design for traction or robot joints.
  • Experience with real-time industrial fieldbuses such as EtherCAT or CAN/CANopen and safety fieldbus.
  • Experience taking products from prototype through NPI to volume manufacturing, including DFM/DFT, test fixtures, and yield improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Bolt hardware team of mechanical and electrical engineers; set electrical architecture and work with the mechanical team on mechanical architecture.
  • Plan prototype builds and the test program, run design reviews, and drive decisions to closure with software, safety, manufacturing, and product teams.
  • Lead the hardware side of AMR safety certification, including the certification plan, safety functions and evidence, and test-lab campaigns for ISO 3691-4, ANSI/RIA R15.08, and UL 3100.
  • Contribute as an individual contributor where most useful.
  • Specify, select, and integrate the battery pack, BMS, and charger from a battery manufacturer, including requirements, vendor evaluation, CAN communications, charge and discharge limits, and pack-level safety and certification evidence.
  • Drive architecture and component decisions through requirements and trade studies, including pack capacity, drive configuration, peak and regenerative current, and thermal considerations.
  • Perform hands-on technical work including schematic capture, high-current PCB layout, board bring-up, test planning, and root-cause debugging on the bench and robot.
  • Design for safety and certification through fault analysis, derating, and power-cutoff paths used by functional safety.
  • Hire, mentor, and grow the hardware team.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact for battery, charger, drive, and PCBA vendors.

Benefits

  • Employee stock options for all full-time employees.
  • Paid time off.
  • Medical insurance.
  • Dental insurance.
  • Vision insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • Disability insurance.
  • 401(k).
