About The Position

IMEG is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This opportunity is structured with both a Technical Path and a Project Management Path for candidates who will support moderate to complex projects and help deliver larger, high-complexity mechanical system projects with limited support from senior staff. In this role, you will contribute to project execution, engineering analysis, design, implementation oversight, mentoring, budgeting, and cross-functional collaboration for work in the vertical building industry. You will join a team serving industrial and manufacturing clients with broader MEP exposure, advancing high-performance, energy-efficient design aligned with MEP2050 and AIA2030.

Requirements

  • Advanced proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications
  • Advanced proficiency in technical and analytical skills including proficiency of principles in thermodynamics, psychrometrics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics relating to mechanical design in HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems
  • Strong training, mentoring and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated leadership traits in the project management career path; ability to mentor, train, motivate, and lead others
  • Adept in the technical aspects of one’s discipline
  • Mastery of technical and analytical skills including proficiency of principles in thermodynamics, psychrometrics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics relating to mechanical design in HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems
  • Strong training and mentoring skills
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License required
  • 7 years of experience minimum required, 8 preferred, in the building design consulting industry
  • Ability to perform final quality control check in their area of expertise
  • Ability to sell work and develop client relationships
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Eagerness to adapt to new challenges
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite including but not limited to Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Ability to travel up to 20% with occasional overnight stays

Responsibilities

  • Lead design efforts for the analysis and design of HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems for moderate to complex projects.
  • Create detailed designs, specifications, and calculations using engineering software and tools in line with code requirements and IMEG standards.
  • Perform site assessments and generate technical analyses and reports.
  • Partner with clients to gather project requirements, communicate technical information, and build strong working relationships.
  • Review system designs, calculations, specifications, and project correspondence, and apply quality control processes to support standards compliance.
  • Provide technical training and mentoring, and assist with resolving field issues with limited support from senior staff.
  • Stay current on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices, and contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG.
  • Prioritize safety in all aspects of engineering work and identify potential safety risks associated with mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated solutions and participate in project interviews and presentations.
  • Coordinate, oversee, and manage projects ranging in size and complexity.
  • Assist Project Executives and Client Executives with design scopes of work, fee calculations for proposal generation, and contract reviews.
  • Create project schedules with milestone targets and deadlines, and serve as the point of contact for teams and clients.
  • Create monthly billings, submit financial information to Accounting in a timely manner, and update billing projections and estimated completion percentages monthly.
  • Ensure design follows owner standards and requirements, IMEG standards, and code requirements, and ensure milestone deliverables, quality control processes, and construction technical support stay on track.
  • Coordinate scheduling with design staff through all phases of design and construction, and schedule and lead progress meetings with documentation.
  • Conduct construction site visits and provide documentation as needed or requested.
  • Respond to and resolve client and construction concerns, and manage change orders and obtain appropriate approvals.
  • Train, mentor, and motivate staff, and build, maintain, and develop client relationships.
