Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer - Onsite

Medtronic•Boxborough, MA
•Onsite

About The Position

Medtronic is developing next-generation X-ray imaging technologies for interventional and image-guided procedures. The mechanical engineering team designs, integrates, verifies, and supports the lifecycle of complex capital equipment systems combining mechanical, electrical, and software technologies. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will play a key technical role in developing a next-generation X-ray imaging system, leading mechanical engineering projects and technical workstreams from concept development through detailed design, system integration, verification, and product implementation. The role calls for technical judgment, ownership, and collaboration across engineering, quality, manufacturing, suppliers, and other external partners. The position is based in Boxborough, Massachusetts, and requires onsite presence four days per week for hands-on design, prototyping, testing, and cross-functional collaboration. Office duties include regular independent mobility, computer interaction, and communication with peers and co-workers. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 4 years of engineering experience, or a master's degree and at least 2 years of engineering experience, or a Ph.D. with 0 or more years of experience.
  • Experience in mechanical product development, with ownership of engineering projects or major technical workstreams.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software and engineering drawings, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • For baccalaureate degrees earned outside the United States, a degree satisfying the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.
  • Roles below Principal level require unrestricted U.S. work authorization at hire and throughout employment; sponsorship is offered exclusively for Principal-level roles and above.

  • Experience developing complex electromechanical or motion-control systems for capital equipment.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, SolidWorks Product Data Management (PDM), Agile Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), or similar engineering data-management systems.
  • Experience with verification planning, test-fixture development, product transfer, and manufacturing-readiness activities.
  • Experience in regulated product-development environments, including medical devices or X-ray imaging systems.
  • Experience supporting system integration activities for complex multidisciplinary products.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical engineering projects and technical workstreams from requirements definition through design, verification, and implementation.
  • Design and develop mechanical and electromechanical components, assemblies, mechanisms, fixtures, and test equipment.
  • Create, review, and release 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and product-development documentation.
  • Investigate root causes of mechanical, integration, manufacturing, and product-performance issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Define verification strategies, author engineering test protocols, develop test fixtures, and evaluate test results.
  • Collaborate with suppliers, subcontractors, and cross-functional teams to evaluate technical solutions and resolve engineering challenges.
  • Support system integration, design reviews, engineering changes, configuration management, and design transfer activities.
