About The Position

The Health & Safety Advisor exists to establish and strengthen a consistent, organization-wide approach to occupational health and safety across The Salvation Army in Canada. By designing scalable programs and translating legislation into practical solutions, the role ensures compliance while advancing a proactive, risk-based safety culture. Its impact is seen in safer workplaces, reduced incidents, and improved operational resilience, enabling leaders and teams to embed prevention-focused practices into everyday operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in health and safety or related discipline
  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive H&S experience, including program development or system implementation.
  • Apply comprehensive knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation across multiple Canadian jurisdictions to ensure compliance.
  • Build policies, procedures, and safety programs from the ground up that are practical and effective in diverse environments.
  • Translate complex regulatory and technical requirements into clear, actionable guidance for operational teams.
  • Navigate multi-industry and multi-site environments, including unionized settings, to support consistent safety practices.
  • Integrate ISO 45001 and management system frameworks into program design and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Analyze large HR and safety datasets using Excel and HRIS tools to identify trends, validate data, and inform decision-making.
  • Assess enterprise-level risks, anticipate emerging hazards, and align safety initiatives with organizational strategy and mission.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and sound judgment while managing sensitive information and high-pressure situations.

Nice To Haves

  • The Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Health & Safety Consultant (CHSC) designation would be considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement enterprise-wide H&S programs that establish consistent processes for risk identification, incident management, and emergency preparedness.
  • Develop policies, standards, and tools aligned with ISO 45001 and Canadian legislation to ensure compliant and effective safety practices.
  • Standardize scalable solutions that can be applied across diverse operations and industries while maintaining practical usability.
  • Interpret multi-jurisdictional legislation and translate requirements into clear, actionable controls for leaders and teams.
  • Guide stakeholders on jurisdiction-specific obligations while reinforcing a cohesive national safety approach.
  • Drive risk-based safety practices by leading hazard assessments and enabling effective mitigation using the hierarchy of controls.
  • Strengthen organizational capability by supporting training, awareness initiatives, and shared accountability for safe work practices.
  • Monitor performance through metrics, data analysis, and reporting to identify trends, inform decisions, and support continuous improvement.
