About The Position

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will deliver high-quality, resilient releases by designing, developing, troubleshooting, maintaining, optimizing, and scaling BlackLine’s cloud-based backend services. The role bridges software engineering and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), collaborating across teams to build scalable features, improve services, automate CI/CD pipelines, establish observability, and maintain platform availability. You will help set engineering practices and contribute to a quality-first, reliability-focused culture. The position includes mentoring junior team members, identifying and addressing performance or scalability risks, supporting releases and incidents, and collaborating with peers and leadership. It also calls for continuous learning in cloud-native technologies, automated testing, and developer productivity tools. BlackLine describes its workplace as combining virtual and in-person interactions; candidates within a reasonable commute of an office are expected to work in the office at least three days a week.

  • At least 4 years of software development experience using a general-purpose programming language such as C#, .NET, Java, Go, or Python.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience building web applications, SaaS products, and high-throughput RESTful APIs or microservices.
  • Hands-on experience or an operational background in SRE/DevOps practices, such as automated deployments, telemetry and monitoring, containerization, and infrastructure reliability.
  • Practical experience with Docker and container orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes, EKS, or AKS.
  • Experience configuring and managing CI/CD pipelines, such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins, and automated testing frameworks.
  • At least 1 year of experience with AI development tools, coding assistants, and modern productivity-enhancing processes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with service-oriented architecture, event-driven microservices, and designing or scaling high-performance distributed systems.
  • Experience authoring and managing Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Helm, or CloudFormation.
  • Advanced SQL knowledge, including stored procedures, data models, and transactional flows, and experience with PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with messaging and streaming platforms such as Kafka, SQS, or RabbitMQ, as well as API gateways, identity and authentication management, and workflow orchestration.
  • Familiarity with distributed tracing, APM, and metrics collection using Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, Splunk, or ELK Stack.
  • Experience with front-end technologies such as HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • Active experience with open-source tools, chaos engineering, and resilient architectural patterns.
  • Experience with Scrum or Agile methodologies and a focus on automation, unit testing, and process improvement.
  • Background in FinTech, accounting, or financial services.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and deliver product features and scalable cloud backend microservices while meeting timelines, coding standards, requirements, and quality expectations.
  • Implement and refine software development techniques to meet integration, performance, security, maintainability, and high-availability expectations.
  • Promote software quality and technical excellence by establishing good practices and writing clean, testable, maintainable, and secure code.
  • Architect, enhance, and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines to support zero-downtime rolling deployments, automated verification, and rapid releases.
  • Establish SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets; build telemetry and monitoring solutions to support rapid detection and resolution of issues.
  • Promote a quality-first, reliability-focused engineering culture and act as an agent of change within the organization.
  • Mentor and coach junior team members on architecture, automated testing patterns, and modern DevOps practices.
  • Identify issues, bottlenecks, latency spikes, gaps, and scalability risks, and collaborate with peers and leadership to address them.
  • Perform critical maintenance, deployment, and release support; participate in blameless post-mortems and provide occasional off-hours support.
  • Collaborate effectively, communicate technical information clearly, and focus on results and customer value.
