Lead SRE Ops

JPMorgan Chase & Co.•Houston, TX

About The Position

As a Lead Site Reliability Engineer at JPMorganChase within Enterprise Technology (Infrastructure Platforms), you will hold a leadership role, demonstrate knowledge across multiple technical domains, and advise others on technical and business challenges. You will lead resiliency design reviews, break complex problems into work for other engineers, serve as technical lead for medium- to large-scale data protection platforms, and mentor engineers. You will be the primary owner of enterprise backup and data protection platforms—including Cohesity, Commvault, and NetBackup—ensuring the reliability, recoverability, and compliance of critical firm data assets. The role includes hands-on administration, backup policy configuration, disaster recovery operations, platform management, and legacy-system migration planning. You will lead operational initiatives for data protection, retention, file recovery, backup telemetry, reporting, and annual certification. You will improve platform reliability using analytics, establish service level indicators and objectives with stakeholders, and lead incident response for data protection applications. The position also involves appropriately using enterprise-authorized AI capabilities for incident analysis and reliability workflows, with validation, traceability, auditability, resiliency, and security controls. This position requires the ability to work 7x12-hour shifts as scheduled, including weekends as required by business needs, supporting mission-critical data protection infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Formal training or certification in site reliability engineering concepts and 5+ years of applied experience.
  • Hands-on experience with Cohesity, Commvault, and NetBackup, including administration, data deduplication, storage optimization, policy management, tape library operations, and enterprise-scale deployments.
  • Understanding of backup product capabilities, including frequency scheduling, retention, immutability, classification-based handling, backup monitoring, automatic retry, failure alerting, integrity checks, and restore capabilities.
  • Proficiency in reliability, scalability, performance, security, enterprise system architecture, toil reduction, and other site reliability practices.
  • Knowledge and experience in observability, including white- and black-box monitoring, service level objective alerting, and telemetry collection using tools such as Grafana, Dynatrace, Prometheus, Datadog, or Splunk.
  • Fluency in at least one programming language such as Python, Java/Spring Boot, or .NET, with experience automating and scripting backup operations.
  • Proficiency with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab, or Terraform, and container and orchestration technologies including Kubernetes, Docker, and ECS.
  • Experience troubleshooting common networking technologies and issues, and knowledge of storage technologies and SAN/NAS environments.
  • Experience with encrypted local disk backup and encrypted backup replication to alternate locations, including backup certification processes and compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience using enterprise-authorized AI capabilities to improve SRE workflows, with strong validation habits and awareness of data sensitivity.
  • Ability to assess AI-assisted operational recommendations for correctness and risk, define appropriate team-use guardrails, and align outcomes with resiliency and security expectations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience identifying and solving complex data structure and algorithm problems in large-scale data protection environments.
  • Experience in 24x7 production support environments, including shift-based coverage and on-call incident response.
  • Advanced knowledge of software applications and technical processes, emerging depth in one or more technical disciplines, and a habit of self-education to evaluate and recommend new technologies.
  • Knowledge of Data Protection 2.0 platform capabilities and familiarity with enterprise backup certification and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience working across multiple time zones in a globally distributed, mission-critical infrastructure environment.

Responsibilities

  • Model and champion site reliability culture and practices, documenting and sharing knowledge through internal forums and communities of practice.
  • Administer Cohesity, Commvault, and NetBackup environments, including backup policy configuration, disaster recovery operations, platform management, and legacy-system migration planning.
  • Drive backup initiatives covering data protection, retention, and file recovery to meet recovery requirements; oversee backup telemetry, reporting, and annual certification processes.
  • Improve the reliability and stability of data protection applications and platforms using data-driven analytics, identifying and resolving technology bottlenecks.
  • Collaborate with the team to define service level indicators and partner with stakeholders to establish service level objectives and error budgets.
  • Serve as the main point of contact during major incidents involving data protection applications; manage escalation and resolve issues to minimize business impact.
  • Use enterprise-authorized AI capabilities for incident triage, troubleshooting, and post-incident analysis, validating outputs and handling operational data according to sensitivity and security requirements.
  • Lead reuse-first adoption of AI-assisted reliability workflows across the software development lifecycle and toolchain, including CI/CD quality checks, test and validation automation, and operational readiness, with appropriate traceability, auditability, resiliency, and security controls.
  • Provide technical expertise and advice, and mentor other engineers.
  • Work scheduled 7x12-hour shifts, including weekends when required by business needs.
