Lead SRE Ops

JPMorganChase•Houston, TX

About The Position

As a Lead Site Reliability Engineer at JPMorganChase within Enterprise Technology (Infrastructure Platforms), you will hold a leadership role supporting mission-critical enterprise backup and data protection platforms. You will serve as the primary owner of Cohesity, Commvault, and NetBackup platforms, helping ensure the reliability, recoverability, and compliance of critical firm data assets. The role includes leading resiliency design reviews, breaking complex problems into manageable work, acting as a technical lead for medium- to large-scale data protection platforms, and mentoring engineers. You will lead platform administration, backup policy configuration, disaster recovery operations, platform management, and migration planning for legacy systems. You will also advance reliability practices through service-level measurement, data-driven analysis, incident leadership, and operational improvements. The role uses enterprise-authorized AI capabilities for incident response and reliability workflows, with emphasis on validating outputs and maintaining traceability, auditability, resiliency, and security controls. The position supports mission-critical infrastructure and requires the ability to work scheduled 7x12-hour shifts, including weekends as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Formal training or certification in site reliability engineering concepts and at least 5 years of applied experience.
  • Hands-on experience with Cohesity, Commvault, and NetBackup, including platform administration, data deduplication, storage optimization, policy management, tape library operations, and enterprise-scale deployments.
  • Understanding of backup product service capabilities, including scheduling frequency, retention, immutability, classification-based handling, backup monitoring, automatic retries, failure alerts, integrity checks, and restore capabilities.
  • Proficiency in reliability, scalability, performance, security, enterprise system architecture, toil reduction, and other site reliability practices.
  • Knowledge and experience in observability, including white- and black-box monitoring, service-level-objective alerting, and telemetry collection using tools such as Grafana, Dynatrace, Prometheus, Datadog, or Splunk.
  • Fluency in at least one programming language, such as Python, Java/Spring Boot, or .NET, and experience automating and scripting backup operations.
  • Proficiency with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab, or Terraform, and with container and orchestration technologies including Kubernetes, Docker, and ECS.
  • Experience troubleshooting common networking technologies and issues, and knowledge of storage technologies and SAN/NAS environments.
  • Experience with encrypted local disk backup and encrypted backup replication to alternate locations, including knowledge of backup certification processes and compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience using enterprise-authorized AI capabilities to improve SRE workflows, with strong validation habits and awareness of data sensitivity.
  • Ability to assess AI-assisted operational recommendations for correctness and risk, define team-use guardrails, and ensure outcomes meet resiliency and security expectations.
  • Ability to work scheduled 7x12-hour shifts, including weekends as required by business needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience identifying and solving complex data structure and algorithm problems in large-scale data protection environments.
  • Experience in 24x7 production support environments, including shift-based coverage models and on-call incident response.
  • Advanced knowledge of software applications and technical processes, emerging depth in one or more technical disciplines, and a habit of self-education to evaluate and recommend new technologies.
  • Knowledge of Data Protection 2.0 platform capabilities and familiarity with enterprise backup certification and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience working across multiple time zones in a globally distributed, mission-critical infrastructure environment.

Responsibilities

  • Model and champion site reliability culture and practices, documenting and sharing knowledge through internal forums and communities of practice.
  • Lead hands-on administration, backup policy configuration, disaster recovery operations, and platform management across Cohesity, Commvault, and NetBackup environments, including legacy-system migration planning.
  • Drive backup initiatives covering data protection, retention, and file recovery, including oversight of backup telemetry, reporting, and annual certification processes.
  • Improve the reliability and stability of data protection applications and platforms using data-driven analytics; identify and resolve technology bottlenecks proactively.
  • Work with the team to identify service level indicators and partner with stakeholders to establish service level objectives and error budgets.
  • Act as the main point of contact during major incidents involving data protection applications, using incident management and escalation skills to resolve issues and minimize business impact.
  • Use enterprise-authorized AI capabilities to accelerate major-incident triage, troubleshooting, and post-incident analysis, validating outputs and handling operational data according to sensitivity and security requirements.
  • Lead reuse-first adoption of AI-assisted reliability workflows across the software development lifecycle and toolchain, including CI/CD quality checks, test and validation automation, and operational readiness, while ensuring traceability, auditability, resiliency, and security controls.
  • Provide technical expertise, advice, and mentorship to other engineers.
  • Work scheduled 7x12-hour shifts, including weekends as required by business needs, in support of mission-critical data protection infrastructure.
