About The Position

Eversource’s Transmission System Planning department supports the transformation of the electric power system while maintaining a safe, reliable, and resilient bulk electric system. The Senior Engineer serves as a technical subject matter expert conducting advanced power system modeling, simulation, and planning studies, with a focus on transmission planning, operational studies, electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis, and inverter-based resource (IBR) integration. The role evaluates company and industry data and develops cost-effective, reliable transmission solutions for future system needs, including transmission lines, renewable generation, battery energy storage systems, FACTS devices, synchronous condensers, HVDC systems, and other emerging technologies. Studies follow Eversource, ISO New England, NPCC, and NERC requirements. The position may be based in Hartford, Connecticut; Westwood, Massachusetts; or Manchester, New Hampshire. The Senior Engineer leads and presents planning studies, provides engineering input on system solutions, exchanges results and reviews data and assumptions with regional stakeholders, and coordinates with ISO New England, transmission owners, and Eversource departments. The role also oversees vendor and consultant studies, prepares reports and presentations, contributes to long-range planning standards, and supports Transmission Operations and the Control Room through reliability and operational assessments. It develops and maintains high-fidelity EMT models, collaborates on technology research and strategy, represents Eversource on industry committees, conducts operational studies, and mentors junior and associate engineers. This role follows a hybrid schedule. Current guidelines require at least three office days each week, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day arranged with the supervisor. Employees must be able to work in the office up to five days per week when business needs or policy changes require it. The position requires availability for emergency restoration assignments and travel among Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire as needed. Eversource does not offer immigration-related sponsorship for this position.

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system.
  • Detailed experience using power system modeling and simulation software for steady-state power flow, voltage, short circuit, stability, and electromagnetic transient studies.
  • Advanced technical understanding of IBR parameters and modeling, including extensive simulation experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with PSSE, TARA, and PSCAD.
  • Experience applying NERC TPL, NPCC, and ISO-NE planning procedures.
  • Experience applying ANSI, IEEE, and other industry standards in engineering design and system analysis.
  • Must be able to work in the office up to five days per week when needed.
  • Must be available for emergency restoration assignments and travel between MA, CT, and NH as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, conduct, and present scenario-based and probabilistic planning studies under existing and forecast system conditions.
  • Apply engineering expertise to develop robust, reliable, and cost-effective transmission solutions.
  • Exchange study results and technically review data and assumptions from regional and industry stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with ISO New England, area transmission owners, and Eversource departments to understand and mitigate system needs and support reliable future growth.
  • Coordinate and oversee vendor and consultant studies, analyze assumptions, and review conclusions for integration into company initiatives.
  • Prepare engineering outputs and summarize findings in reports, spreadsheets, and presentations for colleagues, management, industry groups, and regional stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional groups to develop long-range planning standards and criteria for integrating technologies such as photovoltaic solar, electric vehicles, and battery storage.
  • Support Transmission Operations and the Eversource Control Room with outage coordination, short-circuit, switching transient, and other system reliability studies.
  • Work with Substation Engineering to study substation equipment specifications, insulation coordination, overvoltage and overcurrent protection, harmonics performance, and mitigation measures.
  • Lead, develop, and maintain high-fidelity EMT models for transmission and substation equipment, generators, data centers, and IBR technologies.
  • Collaborate with ISO New England, academia, and DOE National Labs on power system planning and operations technology strategy, research, and development.
