Senior Engineer, Power System Planning (Hybrid Schedule)

Eversource Energy•Westwood, MA
•$129,450 - $143,830•Hybrid

About The Position

Eversource’s Transmission System Planning department supports the transformation of the electric power system while maintaining a safe, reliable, and resilient bulk electric system. The Senior Engineer serves as a technical subject matter expert conducting advanced power system modeling, simulation, and planning studies, with a focus on transmission planning, operational studies, electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis, and inverter-based resource (IBR) integration. The role evaluates and develops cost-effective, reliable transmission solutions to support future system needs, including transmission lines, renewable generation, battery energy storage systems, FACTS devices, synchronous condensers, HVDC systems, and other emerging technologies. Studies are performed in accordance with Eversource, ISO New England, NPCC, and NERC requirements. The position may be based in Hartford, Connecticut; Westwood, Massachusetts; or Manchester, New Hampshire. It follows a hybrid schedule, with current guidelines requiring at least three days in the office, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Employees must be able to work up to five days in the office when needed or if the policy changes. The role requires travel between Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire as necessary and availability for emergency restoration assignments. Salary is commensurate with experience, and the position is eligible for a potential incentive.

  • Advanced knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience producing results and conclusions using power system modeling and simulation software for steady-state power flow, voltage, short circuit, stability, and electromagnetic transients, including lightning and switching, TOV, TRV, and zero-miss studies.
  • Advanced technical understanding of inverter-based resource parameters and modeling, including extensive simulation experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with PSSE, TARA, and PSCAD.
  • Experience applying NERC TPL, NPCC, and ISO-NE planning procedures.
  • Experience applying ANSI, IEEE, and other industry standards in engineering design and system analysis.
  • Must follow Eversource’s Codes of Conduct, Business Ethics, and Environmental requirements.
  • Must be available to travel between Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire as necessary.
  • Must be available for emergency restoration assignments, which may occur outside normal responsibilities, work hours, and location.
  • Must be able to work up to five days in the office when required by business needs or policy.

  • Advanced degree or certifications, such as an MSEE, Ph.D., or PE.
  • PE license.
  • Programming experience with Python or VBA.
  • Experience with Powertech TSAT or VSAT, ASPEN Oneliner, ATP-EMTP, EMTP-RV, or PI Vision.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, conduct, and present scenario-based and probabilistic planning studies under a variety of existing and forecast system conditions.
  • Provide sound engineering input to develop robust, reliable, and low-cost solutions.
  • Exchange study results and technically review data and assumptions from regional and industry stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with ISO New England, area transmission owners, and Eversource departments to understand and mitigate electric system needs and challenges and enable reliable future growth.
  • Coordinate and oversee studies performed by vendors and consultants; analyze assumptions and review conclusions for integration into company initiatives.
  • Prepare engineering outputs and summarize them in reports, spreadsheets, and presentations for colleagues, management, industry groups, and regional stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across functions to develop long-range planning standards and criteria for integrating and enabling technologies such as photovoltaic solar, electric vehicles, and battery storage.
  • Support Transmission Operations and the Eversource Control Room through outage coordination, short-circuit, switching transient, and other system reliability studies.
  • Work with Substation Engineering to study and identify equipment specifications, insulation coordination, overvoltage and overcurrent protection, and harmonics performance and mitigation for transmission and substation facilities.
  • Lead, develop, and maintain high-fidelity EMT models for transmission and substation equipment, including lines, transformers, shunt reactors and capacitors, surge arresters, generators, synchronous condensers, data centers, and IBRs such as STATCOMs and SVCs.
  • Collaborate with ISO-NE, academia, and DOE National Laboratories on power system planning and operations technology strategy, research, and development.
