Principal Engineer, System Planning (Hybrid Schedule)

Eversource Energy•Westwood, MA
•$150,300 - $167,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Eversource is hiring two Principal Engineers to join its Transmission System Planning team. The role provides technical leadership in bulk electric power system modeling and planning, conducts complex system planning studies, develops solutions to unique or complex engineering problems, and makes major technical and standards recommendations. Positions may be based in Hartford, Connecticut; Westwood, Massachusetts; or Manchester, New Hampshire. The Principal Engineer develops and improves models representing transmission lines, transformers, generators, circuit breakers, FACTS devices, inverter-based resources, battery storage, and other system components. The role performs mandatory compliance analyses under Eversource, ISO-New England, NPCC, and NERC criteria. It also prepares regulatory documents, testimony, and written responses, and may testify in proceedings. The engineer may represent Eversource on regional, national, and international transmission planning committees and working groups. This position follows a hybrid schedule. Current guidelines require at least three office days per week, including Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the third day agreed upon with a supervisor. Employees must be able to work in the office up to five days per week when needed or if policy changes. Emergency restoration assignments may require work outside normal responsibilities, hours, or location.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least 10 years of specialized experience in power system design and software simulations; transmission system design and simulation experience is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical theory as applied to planning an electric power supply system.
  • Detailed experience producing results and conclusions using power system modeling and simulation software for power flow, voltage, short-circuit, stability, and electromagnetic transient analysis.
  • Proficiency with PSSE, OneLiner, PSCAD, TARA, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience applying NERC, NPCC, and ISO-NE standards and planning procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal, regional, and local standards and industry codes applicable to the Eversource transmission system.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills for internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to independently identify problems, develop technically sound solutions, and make decisions on complex issues with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to provide work direction, take authority, analyze complex information, recognize strategic implications, and make well-reasoned recommendations.
  • Must be able to work in the office up to five days per week when required.
  • Must be available for emergency restoration assignments as required.

  • Knowledge of state and local regulatory regulations.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a technical specialist and recognized expert in transmission planning and integrated power system development.
  • Lead complex, sensitive, and potentially multidisciplinary engineering assessments and modeling projects using advanced technology.
  • Prepare documentation and testimony for regulatory filings and compliance studies.
  • Present recommendations and results to management at appropriate levels.
  • Represent Eversource on regional, national, and international committees and working groups, including NERC, NATF, IEEE, and state public utility commissions.
  • Lead and conduct reliability and strategic scenario-based planning studies, including thermal, voltage, short-circuit, dynamic stability, PV, transfer-limit, and electromagnetic transient assessments.
  • Contribute engineering input to model development and updates.
  • Review data and assumptions provided by regional and industry stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with ISO-New England, transmission owners, and Eversource departments to understand and document system compliance, needs, and challenges.
  • Communicate study results and recommendations through data updates, reports, and summary presentations.
