Senior Director Software Engineering - Remote
About The Position
As a Senior Director of Software Engineering within Optum Technology, you will lead the strategic vision, architectural modernization, and delivery of high-impact enterprise software engineering solutions. You will champion the adoption and integration of advanced technologies and intelligent frameworks across engineering teams to address complex healthcare challenges, improve operational efficiency, and deliver digital healthcare experiences. The role partners with executive business stakeholders, leads multidisciplinary engineering teams, and establishes governance and operational standards for large-scale software systems. The position is remote from anywhere within the United States. Employees hired in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area must work in the office at least four days per week. Remote employees must follow UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy.
Requirements
- At least 5 years of experience leading software engineering teams, setting strategic technical direction, and overseeing enterprise application delivery.
- At least 5 years of experience in technical strategy, data science, or applied machine learning leadership.
- At least 3 years of quantifiable experience designing and deploying solutions using generative AI frameworks, such as LangChain, Vertex AI, or Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines.
- At least 3 years of experience with MLOps frameworks, model monitoring, governance, and evaluation protocols in production environments.
- At least 3 years of experience with enterprise architecture concepts, cloud-native deployments, and legacy software modernization.
Nice To Haves
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Demonstrated experience with agentic frameworks and platforms, such as AgentForce.
- Expertise in executive stakeholder engagement, technical communication, and driving cross-organizational alignment.
- Broad background in modern cloud architectures (Azure, AWS, or GCP) and containerized microservices.
- Background or prior experience in healthcare, health tech, or pharmacy technology.

- Champion artificial intelligence and modern engineering paradigms, shaping how software systems are architected, deployed, and used.
- Integrate enterprise technology tools, establish strategic development goals within team growth plans, and align hiring with emerging engineering competencies.
- Promote ethical technology deployment by embedding transparency, fairness, accountability, and security throughout the software development lifecycle.
- Direct the architecture, design, and implementation of scalable, resilient cloud enterprise platforms and legacy application modernization.
- Provide strategic leadership, coaching, and mentorship to engineering managers, principal engineers, and software teams.
- Partner with cross-functional leaders, enterprise architecture teams, and executive stakeholders to align technical roadmaps with business goals.
