About The Position

Collins Aerospace is seeking an experienced Senior Chemical and Materials Engineer to provide technical leadership and engineering support for metallurgical evaluation, materials characterization, chemical processing, welding, and thermal processing activities. In this role, you will support material and process qualifications, evaluate metallurgical samples, interpret engineering drawings and material specifications, and provide technical recommendations to ensure product and process conformance. Your mission is to apply advanced materials and chemical engineering expertise to support manufacturing, quality, process control, and product development while ensuring compliance with internal requirements, customer specifications, and applicable industry standards. Candidates must be able to work onsite at the Rome, NY facility.

Requirements

  • A degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM), or equivalent and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience.
  • Prior experience with metal working material processes to include but not limited to: machining, electrochemical machining, metal joining processes, thermal treatment processes, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced knowledge of metallurgical laboratory processes and evaluation techniques.
  • Experience with steel, titanium, aluminum, and other aerospace alloys.
  • Experience with weld evaluation, weldments, metal joining processes, and welding-related metallurgy.
  • Experience with thermal processing and heat-treatment processes used to modify material properties.
  • Experience supporting NADCAP/PRI accreditation, audits, or compliance activities.
  • Knowledge of aerospace material specifications, customer requirements, and industry standards.
  • Experience with chemical processing, hazardous material handling, storage, and disposal.
  • Experience working with external laboratories and coordinating outsourced testing activities.
  • Experience developing and maintaining laboratory procedures, process controls, technical reports, and objective evidence.
  • Experience supporting material and process qualification activities within a manufacturing or aerospace environment.
  • Experience providing technical guidance, mentoring, or process support to engineers, technicians, and other laboratory personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership for metallurgical laboratory activities, including materials characterization, weld evaluation, and thermal processing analysis.
  • Process and evaluate metallurgical samples through cutting, mounting, polishing, etching, and examination of steel, titanium, aluminum, and other alloys.
  • Evaluate weldments and thermal processing samples for development, qualification, certification, periodic checks, and product conformance.
  • Support qualification of personnel, processes, equipment, and materials while ensuring compliance with engineering, quality, and customer requirements.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, material specifications, and applicable industry standards to establish evaluation and acceptance criteria.
  • Analyze metallurgical and materials data, identify material or process issues, and provide technical recommendations to Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Operations.
  • Author technical reports and maintain records and objective evidence in accordance with internal, customer, regulatory, and NADCAP/PRI requirements.
  • Coordinate with external laboratories and support outsourced testing when additional capabilities are required.
  • Maintain and improve laboratory procedures, process controls, chemical handling practices, and safety requirements while supporting NADCAP accreditation.
  • Support cross-functional engineering reviews and continuous improvement initiatives involving materials, chemical processes, metallurgical requirements, and manufacturing processes.
