About The Position

The Senior Business Systems Engineer designs, builds, integrates, and modernizes business applications and data flows that support organizational operations. Reporting to the Senior Director of Engineering & Architecture, this senior individual contributor owns complex technical initiatives from discovery and solution design through implementation, migration, production cutover, and operational handoff. The role combines business application architecture and administration with hands-on scripting, database work, API integration, and data migration engineering. The engineer independently investigates unfamiliar systems, identifies missing requirements and dependencies, develops practical delivery plans, and resolves technical obstacles while obtaining necessary business decisions and approvals. The role personally develops automation, migration tools, and working prototypes; validates proposed solutions during requirements discovery; and partners with software developers when solutions need further development into supported products. It also improves application reliability, data quality, and business processes across Finance, HR, Contracts, Legal, Operations, and Marketing. The position partners with stakeholders across CRM, accounting and financial systems, HRIS, contract lifecycle management, marketing automation, websites, and CMS platforms. It owns solution design across application boundaries, develops and maintains reusable automation and API workflows, applies version control and CI/CD practices, and handles enterprise application administration and lifecycle improvements. The engineer also coordinates vendors, resolves escalated incidents, maintains technical documentation and runbooks, trains users, and mentors technical peers. The role may participate in an on-call rotation as coverage is established; assigned coverage may include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Travel is estimated at up to six weeks per year. The position is remote for employees residing in AL, FL, IN, MO, MI, NM, NC, OH, OR, PA, SC, TN, TX, or WY. US citizenship is required, and the employee must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Offers are contingent on successful completion of a standard background check.

Requirements

  • At least 12 years of progressively responsible experience across business systems, systems integration, software engineering, data engineering, or automation engineering, including recent hands-on ownership of complex enterprise application and data initiatives.
  • Strong practical proficiency in PowerShell or Python, with experience personally developing, testing, debugging, and maintaining reusable scripts, modules, and tools used in production or controlled migration work.
  • Demonstrated experience building and troubleshooting API integrations, including authentication, pagination, rate limits, data formats, error handling, retries, and recovery from partial failures.
  • Demonstrated ownership of complex migrations or consolidations involving large datasets and multiple systems, including source profiling, transformation, exception resolution, incremental synchronization, validated cutover, and recovery planning.
  • Ability to independently turn ambiguous business objectives into technically sound solutions and delivery plans; discover missing information, validate assumptions, research unfamiliar systems, resolve obstacles, and identify decisions requiring stakeholder input.
  • Experience applying version control, testing, review, logging, documentation, and secure handling of credentials and sensitive data to automation and integration work.
  • Hands-on enterprise application administration and configuration experience, including forms, workflows, permissions, reporting, and maintainable no-code or low-code automation across multiple business functions.
  • Experience developing prototypes to validate requirements and working with software developers on technical design, interfaces, testing, and transition to supported production solutions.
  • Practical experience using automation and AI to improve business workflows and engineering productivity, validating outputs and appropriately protecting business information.
  • Strong diagnostic judgment and communication skills, including explaining technical tradeoffs, coordinating vendors and business stakeholders, leading technical work, and remaining accountable through delivery and operational handoff.
  • US citizenship is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Practical proficiency in both PowerShell and Python, and experience with additional languages or application development frameworks.
  • Strong SQL skills and practical relational database knowledge, including schema design, joins, keys, indexes, transactions, staging, transformation, deduplication, reconciliation, and investigation of data-quality issues.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure for data storage, secure data transfer, managed databases, and application integration, including identity and access management, authentication and authorization, service identities, and secure credential and secret management.
  • Experience with enterprise CRM, accounting or ERP, HRIS, CLM, marketing automation, and CMS platforms comparable to the application portfolio.
  • Experience with integration platforms, event-driven workflows, job orchestration, and automated deployment or release pipelines.
  • Experience improving business systems in an organization with a small internal technical team and multiple external providers.
  • Relevant application, integration, data, or architecture certifications.
  • An active security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with business stakeholders on CRM, accounting and financial systems, HRIS, CLM, marketing automation, websites, and CMS platforms.
  • Translate business objectives into technical requirements, acceptance criteria, and executable delivery plans; investigate source systems, data, dependencies, undocumented behavior, and failure scenarios.
  • Own solution design across application boundaries, including systems of record, data ownership, interfaces, security controls, and operational responsibilities.
  • Maintain a prioritized improvement roadmap with stakeholders and technology leaders; communicate options, estimates, dependencies, and risks, and escalate decisions beyond delegated authority.
  • Develop and maintain reusable PowerShell or Python scripts, modules, and internal tools for integration, data processing, migration, reconciliation, and operational automation.
  • Build reliable API-based workflows with appropriate authentication, pagination, rate-limit handling, retries, checkpoints, recovery, and safeguards against unintended duplicate or repeated changes.
  • Maintain scripts, automation tools, and integration code in Git; apply branching, peer review, documentation, testing, CI/CD, quality and security validation, and approved deployment practices.
  • Coordinate with Engineering and DevOps to protect credentials, track releases, and establish deployment verification and rollback procedures.
  • Build tools with structured logging, secure configuration, and managed dependencies; use dry runs to verify changes before modifying production data.
  • Use AI-assisted tooling where appropriate to improve productivity, validating generated outputs and assumptions before production use.
  • Build proofs of concept during requirements discovery to test API behavior, data assumptions, performance, failure cases, and implementation options.
  • Provide developers with technical specifications, data models, interface contracts, representative test data, acceptance tests, and known limitations; remain involved through validation and release.
  • Own automation and migration tools within the role's scope and agree with Engineering on product development, controls, and maintenance ownership before production adoption.
  • Administer assigned enterprise applications and configure forms, fields, workflows, business rules, permissions, reports, and automation within delegated authority; maintain an accurate application inventory.
  • Implement approved access and data-handling controls for credentials, sensitive records, staging data, and logs; preserve client or tenant separation and coordinate policy exceptions.
  • Manage application and integration vendor relationships with the Director of IT Services; evaluate recommendations, verify deliverables, forecast costs, and obtain required spending approvals before committing funds.
  • Work with vendors to investigate and reproduce defects, document business impact, submit actionable bug reports and feature requests, track progress, escalate issues, coordinate workarounds, and validate fixes.
  • Resolve escalated application and integration incidents after service desk intake; coordinate Engineering and vendor support, communicate impacts, and eliminate recurring failures.
  • Participate in on-call support for assigned applications and integrations as coverage is established.
  • Maintain architecture, configuration, and migration documentation and operational runbooks for diagnosis, recovery, maintenance, and escalation.
  • Train users and departmental champions, support adoption, and mentor technical peers through design reviews, troubleshooting, and knowledge transfer.
