About The Position

The Weather Company is seeking a Senior Enterprise Architect to connect strategic vision with hands-on technical execution. The role defines and maintains target-state architecture across enterprise platforms, business capabilities, and engineering domains. It requires direct work in codebases and infrastructure, including building prototypes and reference implementations, resolving complex cross-system incidents, and implementing cloud, DevOps, and CI/CD foundations. The architect serves as a technical anchor by mentoring teams, setting enterprise standards, and balancing technical debt with long-term business enablement. The position designs coherent enterprise architecture across platforms and domains, translates business strategy into executable target-state architectures and transition roadmaps, and owns reference architectures, patterns, and standards. It defines integration and data architecture, evaluates the existing landscape and modernization options, and contributes production code and shared libraries. It also improves DevOps capabilities, supports incident response, partners with security, privacy, and compliance teams, mentors engineering and architecture staff, and maintains architecture documentation as systems evolve. The role expects thoughtful, proactive use of AI-assisted development tools. The role is with The Weather Company, a global weather provider whose digital properties include The Weather Channel and Weather Underground. The company describes its work as AI-enabled, collaborative, and impactful.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or commensurate experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in system design and software delivery, including at least 3 years in an enterprise, solution, or domain architecture role working across multiple teams or platforms.
  • Practical fluency with AI-assisted development tools, including sound judgment about their appropriate use, risks, and review of their output.
  • Recent, direct experience writing and shipping production code and building or operating CI/CD and cloud infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated experience defining target-state architectures and multi-quarter transition roadmaps that were delivered against.
  • Strong understanding of software design patterns and architectural principles, such as 12 Factor, SOLID, DDD, EDA, SOA, and microservices.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise architecture frameworks and capability modeling, such as TOGAF, ArchiMate, and business capability maps.
  • Extensive experience with AWS, including cost, resilience, and multi-account or multi-region considerations.
  • Practical competency independently building and debugging CI/CD pipelines, containerization, and infrastructure as code; experience with Kubernetes (EKS), Terraform, Helm, ArgoCD, and Grafana/Prometheus.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages, including at least one object-oriented language; examples include Golang, Python, and JavaScript/TypeScript.
  • Strong competency in SQL and NoSQL databases, data modeling, and data flow across system boundaries, specifically MongoDB and PostgreSQL.
  • Expertise in API design and integration architecture, including REST, event-driven and streaming patterns, and contract and versioning strategy.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and maintaining architectural documentation, such as UML, C4, and ADRs, for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership, mentoring, cross-team collaboration, and ability to influence decisions without direct authority.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to communicate both executive-level framing and deep technical detail.
  • Active or prior U.S. security clearance, or eligibility to obtain one.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with large-scale platform modernization, migration, or consolidation programs.
  • Experience in performance optimization, profiling, and tuning of distributed systems.
  • Familiarity with data platform and analytics architecture, such as warehousing, lakehouse, and streaming ingestion.
  • Experience architecting AI/ML workloads, including model serving, feature data, and inference cost management.
  • Exposure to FinOps practices and portfolio-level cloud cost optimization.
  • Background in high-volume, low-latency, or geospatial/time-series data systems.
  • Experience working within security and compliance regimes such as SOC 2, GDPR, and PCI.
  • Experience architecting systems for government or defense customers, including deployment in accredited environments at DoD impact levels IL2 through IL6 under the DoD Cloud Computing SRG.
  • Familiarity with secure and restricted military network environments, such as segmented or air-gapped enclaves, cross-domain solutions, NIPRNet/SIPRNet connectivity, and limited or intermittent egress, and their effects on integration, data movement, and deployment architecture.
  • Working knowledge of federal security and authorization frameworks, including FedRAMP, NIST SP 800-53 and 800-171, RMF and the ATO process, STIG hardening, and CMMC; experience producing required architectural documentation.
  • Certifications in relevant technologies or frameworks, such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Google Cloud Professional Architect, or TOGAF.
  • Contributions to open-source projects, technical communities, or conference speaking engagements.

Responsibilities

  • Design and maintain enterprise-level architecture across multiple platforms, domains, and business capabilities, ensuring system designs fit together coherently.
  • Translate business strategy and capability needs into target-state architectures, transition roadmaps, and sequencing plans that engineering teams can execute.
  • Own reference architectures, patterns, and enterprise standards for assigned domains; drive adoption and lead design review and governance forums.
  • Define integration and data architecture across systems, including API strategy, event and messaging patterns, master data ownership, and system-of-record boundaries.
  • Assess the current-state landscape to identify redundancy, technical debt, and integration gaps, and recommend rationalization, modernization, or build-versus-buy options with explicit cost, risk, and operational trade-offs.
  • Prototype and prove architectural approaches, build reference implementations and shared libraries, and contribute production code alongside delivery teams.
  • Directly implement and improve DevOps capabilities, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, containerization, and observability.
  • Support delivery and incident response by debugging cross-system failures, profiling performance, and implementing remediation.
  • Partner with security, privacy, and compliance functions to meet regulatory, resilience, and data-protection requirements by design.
  • Guide and mentor development teams, solution and platform architects, and senior engineers through architectural direction, design reviews, and code reviews.
