About The Position

American Power Innovations designs and builds custom-engineered electrical power distribution equipment for operations where uptime is not optional. Our Tulsa, Oklahoma plant produces power distribution centers (PDCs), motor control centers (MCCs), switch racks, low- and medium-voltage VFD skids, and custom PLC control panels — engineered, assembled, tested, and commissioned under one roof. The company carries more than 80 years of power distribution heritage. Formerly Layco Electric Innovations, we rebranded as American Power Innovations in 2025 to reflect a period of significant growth and to reinforce our commitment to American manufacturing and domestically sourced materials. Our customers span energy and utilities, data centers, chemical processing, defense, and municipal infrastructure — industries in which a single equipment failure carries real consequences. Our culture is built on four commitments: Customer First – Always, Our People – Our Power, Accountability for Self, and Collaboration at the Highest Level. We are a hands-on organization that values problem solvers, craftsmanship, and people who take ownership of the work in front of them. The Senior Accountant manages the financial tracking, valuation, and analysis of a facility’s entire production cycle, focusing on raw materials, labor, and overhead. This plant-level position directly partners with plant managers, procurement, and production engineers to identify floor inefficiencies, control inventory shrinkage, and safeguard gross margins.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 3 to 6+ years of corporate accounting experience, with a heavy emphasis on long-term contract accounting (ASC 606) in custom manufacturing, defense contracting, or complex industrial engineering.
  • Working knowledge of heavy industrial Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications, such as SAP (CO/FI modules) or Oracle.
  • Highly advanced Microsoft Excel skills (e.g., Power Query, array formulas, XLOOKUP, macro models) to handle massive manufacturing data sets.
  • Solid foundation in GAAP cost methodologies (e.g., standard costing, activity-based costing) and inventory regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Track the gap between contractual billings and actual project progress to manage Unbilled Accounts Receivable (Contract Assets) and Deferred Revenue (Contract Liabilities).
  • Compare historical actual costs against original project estimates for raw materials, sub-assemblies, and specialized engineering labor.
  • Run variance reports to flag structural cost overruns or engineering scope changes that threaten baseline contract profitability.
  • Evaluate the financial scope and formal authorization of contract modifications, updating the active revenue models accordingly.
  • Inventory valuation, standard costing, labor/material/overhead variance analysis, cycle counts, WIP reconciliations, gross margin analysis, and BOM/routing reviews.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries for accrued revenue, cost of goods sold (COGS), and progress billing adjustments.
  • Maintain the plant’s revenue backlog ledger to give executive leadership visibility into future production pipelines.
  • Promptly calculate and record forward loss reserves if an active long-term manufacturing contract shifts into a projected net loss.
